I can't count how many times I took a second to pause and think "I can't believe Disney made a film like this." It's the same feeling I got knowing a record label like Interscope put out an album called To Pimp A Butterfly. It's so radically different and character centric from other comic book adaptations.
My expectations were high based on where we have been culturally for the greater part of this decade and Ryan Coogler really swung for the fences. As a film, it's really good. As a comic book adaptation, it's damn near flawless. It's so good, I walked out of the theater not even thinking of where it ranked among superhero films, but the themes woven into it.
Last thing, if you're one of those people complaining about the heightened potential that this film has in making a cultural impact, kindly shut the fuck up. I am sure that the vast majority of people who see this will be less concerned with who's wearing what and much more with the messages summarized in The first post credits scene.
