I mean Montrosse might know more about magic than he's letting on but the intentions are still clear. Seems like the reason he's sabotaging them along their way to find the book/pages for Christina is because it's gonna put his "son" in mortal danger when/if she ever gets that information..
They even made it clear that his blood(all of it) was needed for her to pull off her spell once she got the pages
