Trump Reportedly Nixed White House Statement Praising McCain After His Death

President Donald Trump reportedly nixed a White House statement praising Sen. John McCain shortly after his death.

McCain died on Saturday from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Yet, according to a Washington Post report, Trump did not want a statement lauding the senator to be sent out from the White House and opted to send a tweet instead.

WaPo reports:

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and other White House aides advocated for an official statement that gave the decorated Vietnam War POW plaudits for his military and Senate service and called him a “hero,” according to current and former White House aides, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations. The original statement was drafted before McCain died Saturday, and Sanders and others edited a final version this weekend that was ready for the president, the aides said.

But Trump told aides he wanted to post a brief tweet instead, and the statement praising McCain’s life was not released.

In his tweet, Trump sent out his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the McCain family but did not offer praise of the senator.

On Sunday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders declined to say if Trump would be attending McCain’s funeral.

However, she did call McCain an “American hero” and said that she, herself, plans to attend the funeral services, which will take place in Washington.

White House Has Stopped Flying Flag at Half-Staff in Honor of John McCain

During a hit on Morning Joe, NBC News Pentagon Reporter Hans Nicholsreported a bit of news that is sure to raise eyebrows as the day progresses. Turns out that the flag that flies over the White House is no longer flying at half-staff, which Nichols reported to host Joe Scarborough as “the White House it doesn’t appear they’re in mourning any longer.”

The flag at the White House was lowered yesterday in memory of Senator John McCain, and still remains at half-staff at the U.S. Capitol (and likely thousands of locations around the country.) But for reasons that aren’t yet clear, the White House flag is no longer half-staff.

Nichols then gave the White House benefit of the doubt, saying “dawn has just broken, sometimes they bring it down at night, but not if lights on it,” before contrasting to Congress at Capitol Hill, it is still at half-staffed.” Nichols has since tweeted the following for comparison.

CBS News White House Correspondent also reported as much Mark Knoller via Twitter:

The White House typically releases proclamations in honor of fallen heroes such as McCain and to announce the decision to fly flags at half-staff, but no such statement was released yesterday, reportedly at the direction of President Donald Trump, who chose instead to honor the service of McCain via Twitter. Trump’s tweet has since been criticized for only offering condolences for the surviving members of the McCain family and not honoring the service of his former political rival.

UPDATE: CBS This Morning is reporting that the White House declined to comment when reached about the U.S. flag flying at full staff.

Trump Resisted Lowering Flag Because He Thought McCain Coverage Was Excessive

While he eventually agreed to lower the White House flag in honor of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) passing — after receiving criticism from veterans — President Donald Trump was resistant to the gesture because he thought McCain’s death was getting too much news coverage.

According to people familiar with the situation who spoke to the Wall Street Journal, Trump thought the reporting on McCain’s passing, just one day after his family announced he would stop seeking medical treatment for his brain cancer, was “over-the-top and more befitting a president,” in WSJ’s words.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reportedly played a leading role in convincing the President to agree to lower the flags again and issue a proclamation on McCain’s death.

“It was 99 percent Sarah,” and partially Chief of Staff John Kelly’s influence that got Trump to change his mind, a senior White House official told WSJ.

The White House flags were lowered to half-staff on Saturday and Sunday, but Trump broke with precedent by not leaving them lowered until McCain’s internment. After receiving considerable backlash from members of Congress and veterans groups alike, the White House re-lowered the flags and Trump issued a proclamation.
