OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

worldstar just embraced the ignorance...

they started off as a place to get ur music put on... niggaz just kept uplaoding fights n porn n shit....and they was like fuck it....if they gonna do it....might as well keep it going

His output shape the perception of Black men with those Black women that flock to see his shit. That's where the damage is done.

Shit, for that matter dope niggas employ Black folks as well and them niggas are celebrated as heroes too so I guess it's par for the course.
What “perception” of black men do you speak of? And comparing drug dealers to Tyler Perry hiring a black videographer is dishonest and not even close to being the same thing.

Yep , but there are some channels on youtube that are helpful like The Black Authority, Professor Black Truth and others.

While I do agree WSHH should be more balanced with putting out just as much positive news as they do the ignorant shit, but WSHH has put out alot of positive news and was instrumental in broadcasting the news in the michael brown and other police brutality situations. It's not all bad.

I still don't think those rape allegations coming out right before Birth of a Nation dropping was a coincidence

It wasn't. Because if Nate Parker had put in work on the street level, he would have gained a lot of power, and they couldn't have that. To actually show a black man in a positive light, directed by a black man, and not have a white person in the movie trying to save them, and show just how ruthless some white people actually were is just wrong to them.

convo from another thread, but i personally think that what's happening with this film is no small feat.

Goldie thinks all Marvel is doing is exploiting black culture. I dont see how this is exploiting where you have black director, majority black cast, black writers, etc...

thoughts

There is no black executive that has equity in the film. (Where the REAL money is.) Only Disney is really going to cash in.

I've already laid it out earlier.

The comparison is between two toxic entities int he Black communities. It looks like it wouldn't matter to you if it's a nigga that sets up shop peddling fucked up mortgages to Black folks, a nigga that opens up a payday loan spot, or some shit like that. As far as you're concerned "he giving Black folks jobs" and that's all that matters, to hell with the negative effects on the community that those people are directly responsible for.

TP's portrayal of Black folks, particularly Black men, has been detrimental to the perception of Black men by those that consume the media he creates. But it's all good as far as you're concerned because he's giving Black folks jobs...

I believe RDJ opted to get a percentage from the ticket sales (possibly merchandise as well) when the 1st Ironman dropped, instead of taking one big check for starring in it.

RDJ made a good move, but you think the black cast got made that offer?

If you were in the Nipssey thread last week talking about needing better images of black folks in tv and film yet think having a super hero movie set in an African nation about an African king whose entire country has prospered mainly by giving a fuck you to the rest of the white world then you're a hypocrite

Listen I'm just happy to see a black movie that's not a rom com or some gospel singing in church or some slave shit.

Or white person goes to inner city school lol

I think most rom coms are corny as fuck but isnt an oft used argument that people wanna see black folks in "normal every day roles". Wouldn't a rom com be just that?

Where was all of this when the Nat Turner movie "A Birth Of A Nation" came out? I saw how people are trying to pool money for bus rides for kids to see Black Panther, but didn't have this energy for Nat Turner who is a real life hero.

Also, it's not lost on me that Disney is going to drop this during Black History month, and Disney is getting all of the money. The cast of Black Panther is going to only get a fraction of the money, and they don't have any equity.

Even though I'm watching the Black Panther movie, it's not a special moment for black America. It's just another movie that's going to drop.
they didnt create the IP tho...i honestly dont know this, but does Robert Downey Jr get any equity in Ironman?

That's not the topic of this thread tho...

@King Du, were you this outraged when Luke Cage came on Netflix?

did you have this same energy?

If Marvel was out here making BP look like some coon, ya'll would have EVERY leg to stand on. If the movie was being directed by a white man, ya'll would have every leg to stand on, but ya are killing me trying to downplay the significance of having an all black cast for this movie.

so people can take off from work to stand in line for Star wars, and people chalk it off to some geek shit, but Oh, let them do it for BP, then its "man ya'll niggas sleep"...which is it??
