I'm getting pretty damn vexed by the 'it needed to be cut' vibes. It didn't.
His hair didn't make him look any more feminine or masculine. What he does look like however is a child who has lost faith in the adult who brought him to that shop. I’ve been in the same situation before and his hair was cut out of pettiness. Now I’m basically back in the situation again. My son is old enough to let us know how he wants his hair and if it’s nothing too crazy I let him do it. It’s his damn head. I won’t be shocked if he comes home with a fade one weekend tho.

So you decide his religion and cut a piece of him that he will never get back? Once the kid reaches adulthood chances are that he wont follow your religion and disagrees with what you did.
