Yes or No; Does The Message stand the test of time?

No need to write a book, a simple yes or no will suffice.

You,& @GOAT keep pushing this narrative that no one is claiming. Very few, if any, groups have a song as iconic as The Message. No one in here has said otherwise.

But BT/The Roots are the better group, in fact you had us vote remember.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 got 1 vote. The Roots was tied for 5th

Those results are skewed because I'm the only one on ABW that actually remembers when Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 were the hottest group in Hip Hop. 20 years from now somebody will make a similar poll and The Roots will get 1 vote and some group that's popular at the time will get 20 votes.

Anyway, I'm not sure why you're comparing Black Thought to Melle Mel. Melle Mel has more songs that people recognize than Black Thought/The Roots, and he did it in an era where rappers had small budgets, top 40 radio wasn't playing rap like they do now, and albums weren't common.

The bottom line, I voted top 25. The reason he's not in my top 10 is because he has 1 hit song out of 10+ albums.

Melle Mel has more hits than Black Thought.

Those results are skewed .

oh word!

So let's get this straight; We've done the best song from every year since 1988 and You Got Me is the only song that got a nomination, but The Roots have hits?

If they have so many hits, how come they don't get nominated for the best song of 93-2000?

You wasn't worried bout results and what's skewed ^here. But that thread you made is.......

I don't even know what point you are trying to prove.

1. Black Thought is a top 25 MC. The reason I don't rank him higher is because he doesn't make hits.

2. Melle Mel has more hits than Black Thought.

^^^ That's my point. Now you can post all the .gifs you want, but can you give me a little clarity in what you're debating?

Yes

Yes or no?? Black Thought and The Roots don’t have any songs that stand tha test of time??

Tha bolded is tha main point of my argument...you say BT is top 25 which I can respect...you rankin’ Melle Mel higher than BT?? Where would he be?? And I’m not talking “cultural impact” because again...he’s a pioneer...but as an MC...body of work...where is Melle Mel?? Higher than BT??

Well let's level the playing field. Melle Mel was in his prime from 1979-1984. His best years were between 82-84. If you compare Melle Mel to anybody else in his era (Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, Spoonie G, Kurtis Blow, Busy B, T-Ski Valley, Spyder D, etc) or if you compare his group, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 to any group in his era (Treacherous 3, Fearless 4, Cold Crush, Funky 4+1, Africa Bambaattaa & The Soul Sonic Force, Crash Crew, Master Don & The Def Committee, etc.) Melle Mel's solo work is better than any solo MC from that era and his work as a member of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 is better than any other group in that era. You can use chart position, sales and accolades (Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Grammys, one of 6 Hip Hop records preserves @ The Library of Congress).

"Every year, the US Library of Congress selects a batch of 25 audio recordings it deems “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant.” The records are chosen for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Selected recordings span eras and genres. They include civil rights speeches, comedy albums, jazz classics and, yes, a handful of hip-hop records. (Recordings have to be at least 10 years old to be eligible for induction.)"

The Roots have been around for 20+ years and don't have anything preserved in The Library of Congress (not saying that they shouldn't but it is what it is).

Everybody in America knows the chorus to The Message. Can you say The Roots have a song that everybody knows the chorus?

Your premise seems to be that Black Thought's body of work is greater than Melle Mel's which makes him better, but you know the saying; quality over quantity. Melle Mel's body of work from 1979-1984 is better than anybody else in that era. Kurtis Blow and kool Moe Dee might have released more albums, but none of them were classics and if I'm being honest, Melle Mel doesn't have a classic album either, but he has about a dozen singles that are classic; The Message, Beat Street, Step Off, World War III, White Lines, New York New York, I Feel For You to name a few.

My point is that Melle Mel was the best MC in his era. Can you say that about Black Thought?

Black Thought has been one of the top MC's for 25+ and counting.

Melle Mel was the best of a mediocre/wack bunch. It's the reason you only measuring him against rappers from the late 70's-earlier 80's cuz he don't stand up against MC's after that.

You sound stupid. The reason I'm comparing him to MCs in that era is because that's when he was in hi prime.

You,& @GOAT keep pushing this narrative that no one is claiming. Very few, if any, groups have a song as iconic as The Message. No one in here has said otherwise.

This entire discussion was sparked from the fact The Roots have no hit song.

Do they have great songs that music nerds know about? Yes. But u ignoring how this convo started with these 2 points....

he doesn't make hits. When I judge an MC, its not just how ill their lyrics are, but do they make radio singles and club bangers?

Nas is one of my favorites but I have him tied with Jay because even though Nas spits better lyrics, Jay is better at making hits.

As far as I know, Black Thought/The Roots have one hit; You Got Me feat Erykah Badu. Otherwise you could listen to commercial radio and go to nightclubs and you wouldn't even know Black Thought exists.

That's why I ranked him top 25.

That's one of the main reasons I rank BT where I do too. U can't be ranked top 10 and not be super significant to the culture. If we removed The Roots albums from hip hop history, nearly nothing changes within the landscape of hip hop. There's too many significant MCs within the game who spit at or near that level.

If we're going off of lyrical skills alone, I got a whole bunch of battle rappers that should be top 10 then.
