Tha bolded is tha main point of my argument...you say BT is top 25 which I can respect...you rankin’ Melle Mel higher than BT?? Where would he be?? And I’m not talking “cultural impact” because again...he’s a pioneer...but as an MC...body of work...where is Melle Mel?? Higher than BT??
Well let's level the playing field. Melle Mel was in his prime from 1979-1984. His best years were between 82-84. If you compare Melle Mel to anybody else in his era (Kool Moe Dee, Grandmaster Caz, Spoonie G, Kurtis Blow, Busy B, T-Ski Valley, Spyder D, etc) or if you compare his group, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 to any group in his era (Treacherous 3, Fearless 4, Cold Crush, Funky 4+1, Africa Bambaattaa & The Soul Sonic Force, Crash Crew, Master Don & The Def Committee, etc.) Melle Mel's solo work is better than any solo MC from that era and his work as a member of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 is better than any other group in that era. You can use chart position, sales and accolades (Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, Grammys, one of 6 Hip Hop records preserves @ The Library of Congress).
"Every year, the US Library of Congress selects a batch of 25 audio recordings it deems “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant.” The records are chosen for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Selected recordings span eras and genres. They include civil rights speeches, comedy albums, jazz classics and, yes, a handful of hip-hop records. (Recordings have to be at least 10 years old to be eligible for induction.)"

The Roots have been around for 20+ years and don't have anything preserved in The Library of Congress (not saying that they shouldn't but it is what it is).
Everybody in America knows the chorus to The Message. Can you say The Roots have a song that everybody knows the chorus?
Your premise seems to be that Black Thought's body of work is greater than Melle Mel's which makes him better, but you know the saying; quality over quantity. Melle Mel's body of work from 1979-1984 is better than anybody else in that era. Kurtis Blow and kool Moe Dee might have released more albums, but none of them were classics and if I'm being honest, Melle Mel doesn't have a classic album either, but he has about a dozen singles that are classic; The Message, Beat Street, Step Off, World War III, White Lines, New York New York, I Feel For You to name a few.
My point is that Melle Mel was the best MC in his era. Can you say that about Black Thought?
