I learned this tactic from my older brother and I use it with people in general when they start to get upset. It throws off people that they're getting more upset while you just sit there calm as fuck and then hit them with "I was just listening to you" when they reply "Why are you just sitting there" because in arguments people don't usually expect the other person to actually listen, they just want to yell, have you respond back so they can keep yelling. It's kept me out of a good number of arguments because you can just let somebody talk til they realize how dumb they sound.

There's no empathy in 'calm down' it sounds like an order you give a dog.

If you don't like what I'm saying then walk away from the argument/discussion. But expressing emotion is one of the best parts of the human experience and I will not be deprived or subdued upon command.
