Don't know if this has been answered, but everything below D are your lower gears

Automatic transmission shifts your gears for you from 1-5 (or higher for newer cars)

So the one below D would be like 4th gear, the next one is 3rd, L is like 1st or 2nd

You use them when you want lower power (or you don't want to go to the higher gears) like for getting out of mud or snow
