Babyn Yar is a ravine where the Nazi death squads - the Einsatzgruppen - machine gunned approximately 33,771 Jews over a course of two days. There were worse massacres during the Holocaust, but this was basically the biggest one where they lured them out to a remote spot to shoot them and pile the bodies in a ditch.
For the rest of the war, the Nazis shot another 100,000 civilians (give or take) in that ravine except this time it was people of all ethnic groups.
