And then lost top rank. Gonna be weird to not here Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant anymore but I’m sure they’ll fully retire now

I'm happy about that shit. Lampley been a shit commentator for years. Calls all the wrong punches. Not going to miss hearing Merchant hate on the winner of a fight cause he don't want them to fight to their advantages.

Jim Lampley is a disgrace of a commentator. Good riddance to that fuck. Him and Merchant were always racially biased against slick black fighters.

In a way I’m glad it’s ending. HBOs boxing coverage just hasn’t been as good was it was 10-15 years ago. This recent fight with GGG was probably the first time in a while I was entertained watching HBO Boxing.

Arum Wants Golovkin On ESPN; Open To Golden Boy/Canelo Deal

By Keith Idec

Now that HBO has announced it is moving away from broadcasting boxing, two of the sport’s biggest stars are TV free agents.

Promoters for middleweight rivals Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin can begin negotiating new rights deals for at least their respective next fights. Both of their contracts with HBO ended following their middleweight championship rematch September 15 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Count Bob Arum among the sport’s power brokers who are very interested in working with Alvarez and Golovkin.

Arum told BoxingScene.com on Thursday that his promotional company’s president, Todd duBoef, has reached out to Tom Loeffler, Golovkin’s promoter, about airing Golovkin’s fights on ESPN or ESPN Pay-Per-View. Top Rank has an exclusive content contract with ESPN and any promoter that wants bouts broadcast on ESPN must work with Top Rank in accordance with that agreement.

For Arum and Top Rank, working with Alvarez obviously would be much more complicated than partnering with Golovkin. Beyond Alvarez’s superstar status, Arum has a contentious relationship with Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter and Top Rank’s franchise fighter for most of De La Hoya’s career.

“Todd will be talking to Tom Loeffler about the possibilities,” Arum said. “And as far as Canelo is concerned, he’s under contract to Golden Boy and they’re experienced enough, I assume, to make their own deal. So if they came to us and wanted to know what ESPN had to offer, we would tell them. But that’s up to Golden Boy.

“As far Canelo goes, we’d wait for Oscar to approach us. And as far as Golovkin goes, Todd’s been reaching out to Loeffler. But as we’ve said, we’re open to doing fights promoted by other promoters. That’s what we’re doing November 3rd with [Miguel] Berchelt and [Miguel] Roman. And that’s what we’re doing February 2nd, when we’re doing [Sergey] Kovalev and [Eleider] Alvarez.”

In addition to ESPN, Showtime, HBO’s longtime premium-cable rival, and DAZN, the new streaming service that has heavily invested in boxing, are among the suitors for Alvarez and Golovkin.

The 28-year-old Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) is almost exclusively a pay-per-view fighter, but De La Hoya seemingly needs another broadcast or streaming partner in addition to Facebook to showcase his company’s other boxers. ESPN and Golden Boy have had content agreements, but not one comparable to the partnership between ESPN and Top Rank.

ESPN might make more sense for Golovkin because Arum could offer him a fight against WBA world middleweight champion Ryota Murata if Golovkin has to wait until next September for a third fight against Alvarez.

Arum has repeatedly discussed making a bout between Japan’s Murata (14-1, 11 KOs) and Kazakhstan’s Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) at the Tokyo Dome. The Hall-of-Fame promoter predicts that a Murata-Golovkin fight could sell out that 55,000-seat stadium in Japan’s capital city.

Murata is scheduled to defend his title against Dallas’ Rob Brant (23-1, 16 KOs) on October 20 in Las Vegas.

De La Hoya Eager To Unseat Trump, Become President of U.S.
By Miguel Rivera

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya generated a lot of headlines a few weeks ago, when the former six division world champion revealed the possibility of entering the Presidential race in 2020.

De La Hoya would love to run against the current President of the United States, Donald Trump.

"One issue that really hurts me is the children being imprisoned by Donald Trump, who separated families. That helps me decide and do the right thing. I believe that the race deserves [me entering], it needs a voice, it needs a representative that is really there for the well-being of our people," De La Hoya explained to Jose Luis Camarillo of OEM.

Should De La Hoya actually run, he already has a plan in place when it comes to the day to day operations of Golden Boy and the large stable of fighters who need attention.

"There is time for everything. I have a great team with Golden Boy Promotions, I have time for everything, I am a person with many projects; Yes, I have many businesses, but I have my team that is excellent," De La Hoya said.

While many believe this topic is nothing more than a joke, De La Hoya makes it clear that he is "very serious" when it comes to the subject of running for President.

"I am contemplating [the idea of running], I am thinking about 2020 ... to run for the Presidency of the United States. And I'm saying this seriously, because I'm ready to put together my team of advisors, advisors, to help me make a decision," De La Hoya said.

"I already thought [about the strategy], I know what I want to do. And look, I am a person, I am a fighter, I fight for my people, I always defend what is right. And thanks to God and to boxing - which has given me everything, we can campaign intelligently to try to win."

HBO's Nelson Denies Ratings Decline Was Factor To Drop Boxing

Peter Nelson, the head of HBO Sports, denies the circulating claims that declining ratings and bad matchups were determining factors behind the network's decision to drop boxing after 45 years of televising live fights.

HBO officially announced on Thursday, that live boxing was no longer going to be showcased in the future.

Over the last few years, HBO has faced very stiff competition from Showtime and their expanding stable of quality fighters. Top Rank has made their mark after leaving HBO, and signing a multi-year content deal with ESPN. And international promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, left both HBO and Showtime, and began an eight year content deal with streaming service DAZN. And Premier Boxing Champions signed content deals with Showtime and FOX.

HBO's ratings, for boxing, have been declining in recent years. With their Super Fly 3 card, which took place earlier this month, generating one of the lowest ratings figures in the network's history.

According to Nelson, the network made their decision based on a single factor - the incoming audience was no longer subscribing on the basis of their boxing content.

“This decision has been a shift, not a result of where we stand in other places in boxing, but directionally where we feel the direction is in HBO Sports,” said Nelson to the Los Angeles Times.

“We had the fight of the year -- the No. 1 pay-per-view event, eight of the top 10 highest rated premium-cable fights. You could say our vibrancy in the sport is as strong as ever.”

Nelson expects boxing to continue forward in a very strong way, with so many options sprouting up for fighters.

“We’re proud of our legacy in boxing. The sport is in a better place because of HBO’s presence in it. We have a tremendous heritage to point to in regard to the road map we provided on how to humanize these fighters and their communities … that aspect of storytelling is one we look to continue,” Nelson said.

“There’s more ample opportunity for fighters across different platforms than ever before. As a fan of the sport, I think that’s great.”

Devin Haney: I'm The New 'Money' - I'm Ready For All Champs!

Nineteen-year-old Devin Haney turned in an impressive performance in a unanimous decision victory in his second consecutive ShoBox: The New Generation main event on Friday night, dominating veteran Mexican fighter Juan Carlos Burgos on SHOWTIME from Pechanga Casino Resort.

The prodigious Haney (20-0, 13 KOs) of Las Vegas used the entire ring to dominate the former three-time world title-challenger Burgos (33-3-2, 21 KOs). Two judges scored the fight 100-90, and the other 97-93 in favor of Haney.

“Burgos is a crafty veteran with a lot of heart but tonight I showed the world why I’m the next super star in boxing,” said Haney, who also promoted his first fight with Haney Promotions. “I’m ready to take on all the champions in the lightweight division. I’m the new money and SHOWTIME is my home. I’m coming for everyone!”

Haney said he won the fight on the inside. “Burgos was softer on the inside,” he said. “Once I started to break him down that took some steam out of him. It depends on who I’m fighting, but I can box on the outside or mix it up on the inside, and tonight I showed both. I used my jab and worked the inside. That was my dad’s gameplan and it worked.”

Longtime ShoBox commentator Steve Farhood agreed that Haney looked impressive on the inside. “I thought at time he should have forced the fight even more on the inside,” Farhood said afterward. “He was the bigger guy. He would do it in spurts, and then he’d circle the ring and that’s when the fans got a little impatient because that’s what we all wanted to see.”

Haney hurt Burgos badly in the sixth landing two right uppercuts, but was unable to finish Burgos, who was fighting after a 13-month layoff. “These veterans don’t go down easy,” Farhood said.

“It’s a natural progression for Devin,” Farhood added. “I didn’t see a lot of snap in his power shots. That’s the only criticism. That and I would have like to have seen him fight on the inside more and land more body shots. It would have been a lot more exciting if he would have gotten the stop.”

Burgos is a natural 130-pounder who was once ranked No. 4 in the junior lightweight division. “I feel this was a test for me. One-hundred thirty-five pounds may have been too much. I’m going to go back down to 130. I’m at my best at that weight.”

He added: “It was hard to fight against a guy that moved so much. He was running up and down the ring. That’s not boxing for me. I’m not going to let this loss defeat me. You’ll see more of me. I’m not going anywhere. Soon I’ll go back to challenge for a world title. You’ll see.”

Conte: Substance Saunders Used Ten-Fold Stronger Than Clenbuterol
By Keith Idec

Victor Conte has been suspicious of Billy Joe Saunders since before Saunders defeated Willie Monroe Jr.

The 68-year-old Conte, imprisoned for his role in the BALCO scandal, worked with Monroe, who lost a one-sided unanimous decision to Saunders a year ago in London. Conte currently works with Demetrius Andrade, who’s preparing for his fight against Saunders at Conte’s Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning (SNAC) training facility in San Carlos, California.

The Saunders-Andrade fight, scheduled for October 20 at TD Garden in Boston, is in jeopardy because Saunders tested positive for oxilofrine, a banned stimulant, in an exam administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on August 30. The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission has scheduled a hearing for October 8 in Boston, where it’ll determine whether to license Saunders for his WBO middleweight title defense versus Andrade.

The outspoken Conte condemned England’s Saunders, who was very critical of Canelo Alvarez amid the Mexican superstar’s clenbuterol ordeal, during a video interview with Ringtv.com’s Cynthia Conte.

“This is a very powerful substance, ten-fold more powerful than clenbuterol,” Conte said regarding oxilofrine. “So Billy Joe Saunders saying that Canelo was taking [clenbuterol], it’s like that’s baby food and [oxilofrine] is the steak. OK? So what he was taking opens up the air passageways. It was an inhaler that he was using. It’s a central nervous system stimulant. It gives you tremendous energy, increases speed, increases power, cuts weight. This is a boxer’s dream drug. So he was using something very potent. On fight night, this is a prohibited substance. But in between competition, the UKAD, anti-doping in the UK, does not test for this. VADA does test for this, so when he signed this enrollment form with VADA, the prohibited substance list is there and given to him. This substance is on there. It’s on the list for the NFL, Major League Baseball, NCAA, everybody, year-round, not out-of-competition testing, with a weak list, like they do with WADA.

“So apparently, he and his trainer realized that this was a loophole that you could drive a Mack truck through and they decided, ‘Here’s a way to drop 25, 30 pounds in a short period of time, give you all kinds of energy and enhancement in training.’ And they tested him – the sample was collected on August the 30th. There is another sample, we believe, and we believe that’s also gonna come back positive as well. This substance clears the body in 24 hours, so we believe that he’s been using this for a long time. And he has been tested, but they don’t test for this substance, so he’s been driving a Mack truck through this loophole.”

UK Anti-Doping, which subjects all boxers from the United Kingdom to testing 365 days per year, only tests for oxilofrine on fight nights. It is not a banned substance other than on fights nights in accordance with UKAD and World Anti-Doping Association regulations.

Thus Saunders, 29, isn’t expected to be punished by UKAD or the British Boxing Board of Control because the failed test overseen by VADA was an out-of-competition exam. Oxilofrine is on VADA’s list of banned substances, however, which could lead the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission to deny Saunders’ application for a license for his fight against Andrade.

If Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) cannot get a Massachusetts boxing license and is stripped of his title, Eddie Hearn, whose company promotes Andrade, has said the top-ranked Andrade will meet Namibia’s Walter Kautondokwo (17-0, 16 KOs) for the vacant WBO middleweight championship October 20. Kautondokwo is the WBO’s No. 2 contender for its middleweight title, one spot below Andrade (25-0, 16 KOs), Saunders’ mandatory challenger.

Whatever happens, Conte is relieved that Andrade’s team insisted on VADA testing for this fight.

“Well, let me say I had strong suspicions watching his last two fights before this fight with ‘Boo Boo’ [Andrade],” Conte said. “Willie Monroe Jr., who I worked with, there was supposed to be testing. And there was no testing until [Saunders] got to the UK on a Sunday, and they tested him on Tuesday, and they fought on a Saturday. So if you look at the pictures, he probably weighed 185, 190, and 30 days later he’s weighing 160. So that seemed highly suspicious to me. And then the same thing with his next fight with David Lemieux in Canada. And, you know, he claimed that he had been doing testing and so on. But once again, we see the chubby guy who turns into the skinny guy in 30 days. Seemed highly suspicious.

“So once the contract was negotiated, there was a clause [in] the Demetrius Andrade versus B.J. Saunders bout [agreement], had a clause in it that if Matchroom requested VADA testing that there would be VADA testing, but only if they requested. Now obviously, money is an issue. It costs $16,000-20,000 to have a testing pool for a couple months for both fighters, before the fight. And so, to make sure that this happened, I agreed to sponsor this testing. So they both enrolled in VADA testing.

“And let me say that WADA testing, the World Anti-Doping Association testing, is considered the gold standard. But it is not. And the reason, what people have to understand is, that it’s not very effective because they have two types of testing – out-of-competition testing and in-testing. So in between fights and on fight night. And what people don’t realize is that the list of performance-enhancing substances that they test for in between fights is very limited.”

Despite what Conte considers a blatant violation of VADA’s rules, he wouldn’t be opposed to Saunders being allowed to move forward with his fight against Andrade.

“The bottom line is this – he signed an agreement to abide by the VADA rules,” Conte said. “He knew and the list was there, and it was on it. And he was taking it, and he continued to take it, and he got busted. OK? So he violated that agreement. That much we know. What’s gonna happen, and are they gonna fine him or what’s gonna happen, that’s yet to be determined. There’s a negotiation going on now. I think the fight should possibly go on, if he agrees not to take that substance and honor that agreement from now until fight night. You know, ultimately this is why we implemented the testing, because he was highly suspect.

“Let me also say that this particular substance can cause mild psychosis. His behavior is such that he’s doing such crazy stuff, you know, all of the above point to this guy’s got some serious problems. And I believe he’s not taking this at a prescribed dosage, but in a super-physiological dose that’s causing him to drop 30 pounds in a month. So I think there’s abuse going on, I think there needs to be a further investigation. I think ‘Boo Boo’ maybe needs to get some money out of the deal, too, for tolerating all this violation of the contract. But we’ll have to see what they negotiate.”
