I'm not saying anyone can step in (I think Gronk is playing well, but he's not a returner). I'm saying it's a position where less talented players get to play. At any other position you have to be the best man in the roster to get that spot (except some young guys earning their stripes). That's why other people don't just get to step in for you. In Tampa nobody's subbing in for Brady, Evans, David, White, etc just because they said they want to.

As a returner, I don't think you're generally the best person on the roster for that job. I think the more elite talent on the roster is saved for starting offense/defense, so you're not really competing against the best for your spot. That's why when the game's on the line you'll see star players lined up to for returns.
Don’t QB’s get benched? Don’t other positional players get less snaps if they struggle and get replaced by someone else on the depth chart?

Nonsense.

There's being fast and being quick.

Being FAST means you can run in a straight line at a high speed

Being QUICK means you have reflexes and coordination to zig zag zig around players that are defending you.

If you draw what a
FAST player does it would look like a straight line.

If you draw what a
QUICK player does it looks like the letter Z

Hester is fast and quick. That's a natural ability that can't be taught, or learned. Either you have it or you don't.

You're making my point. In other spots you have to be the best. So ya, if you're struggling you get replaced becuase you're not the best. These return men don't have to be struggling. DJAX didn't get put in because the coach thought the othe guy was fuckin up. He got put in just because he wanted to go in and the coach knows he's better.

So when Sean Payton puts in Taysom Hill for a few snaps what do you call that? Remember when Primetime used to play WR? William Perry played RB over Walter fucking Payton.

ok cool...

using your logic...

who on the roster when Hester was in his prime is "stepping in" cause there are better options?

Probably nobody. But the request for him to go in is based on his numbers vs other return men. I'm just saying that's not a super competitive group (compared to pretty much every other position that would get HOF consideration).

Hill's put in to run, not play QB. He's not really subbing in for Brees. They're just running wildcat. His job is different than Brees' there. DJAX was stepping in to play the exact same role as the original return man.

Prime wasn't going in over talented WR's. Here's Prime's best receiving season... might as well put him in. He was probably the best player available.

Nobody's said Hester wasn't good at returning kicks...

How? You're reaching saying Hill running the wildcat is the same thing as elite players subbing in at crunch time for return men. And I said prime was probably the next best at the position so he played (which is what I've been saying). The next best WR has 25 catches 380 yards all season.

Man, let's cut the bullshit. For everyone disagreeing with me.

You're saying the designated PR/KR on every team, is the best player that roster has to offer for that position?

:wdf5: .....Da Faq that gotta w/ anything.

YOU the one that came in making that useless point, like anybody said Punt/Kick Returners were.

Y'all are the ones that took issue with me saying it's a fall back position for players that aren't that talented. That's all I've been saying from jump.

But you said a team isn’t replacing the best player at their position on the team for another player. Yet there’s a corner playing WR, a DL playing RB, WR playing RB, TE playing FB etc etc.

Don't try to half quote me.

You're focusing on niches roles made because of the coach's decisions. DJax wasn't subbed on for a niche role or because the coach said so. He was a regular return man just because he said he wanted to do it. Hill is put in for niche plays because Payton says. Perry was put in for a niche role because the coach said so. Perry didn't just get to play RB when he felt like it. Hill doesn't tell Payton when he's going in at QB.

I said that earlier, you just tried to ignore it to make a point.

Note the bolded that you ignore. Players get subbed all the time depending on what the coach is doing. Just formation changes will dictate you being subbed. But the players don't make the call to take your spot whenever they want to.

From a stats POV, Hester probably hasn't done enough to get in the HoF, but in context of his accomplishments, he should be in there. He's not just a run of the mill return guy. He's pretty much the best returner of all time. People always talk about the fact that he broker Deion's record for most return TDs. That is impressive, but people don't talk about how when he was in CHI, he was basically doing more to win games than the offense. That year the Bears went to the SB, the offense was basically starting out on the 40 yard line on average because of Hester's returns. You're not going to put every specialist in the HoF, but I think you can put someone who has distinguished himself as the GOAT in a particular specialty area.

DJAX took that play just because he says he wanted it, and I think plenty of other players can do the same to return men. Not to other HOF positions though.
