OPINION Is Bruno Mars a culture vulture?

nah

im asking YOU personally, do YOU let award shows tell you what music is popular

i've discovered WAY more music on this very site in the year or so its been around than at any point in my life. I owe that to like minded individuals and collective think groups here.

im not looking for award shows decide my listening tastes

if you dont rock with Bruno, then listen to the artists that are making the music he is, but who look like you

The Grammys wasn't created to make people listen to the music, it's to award the artists. Those awards opens doors and opportunities for the artist, simply saying "grammy award winning ___" , doubles those artists' price. Again, I think yall approach these topics on a very surface level.

Listen,

many funk artists have and will die broke, unknown, and unrecognized. you have to be realistic about this. non black artist in BLACK genres become millionaires and highly decorated, while the originators and folks born from the legacy collect scraps in the shadows.

I dont think Bruno is a bad person, I dont even know if I can fully say hes an appropriator or a vultureā€”-thats something I have to really think about but the reason why he is so successful is partly due to his racial ambiguity and thats just plain ol facts.

there is not an artist in front of your face who is there simply because of talent and popularity. there is some sort of machine, indie or major, that has strategized on ways for them to be successful.

we all know Black culture is so damn powerful but because we dont have full control over our images and narratives and because we live in a society that literally sucks and stockpiles every aspect of Blackness while simultaneously destroying the bodies from which it came, we have to watch non-Black artistā€”-fuck that non Black people in general profit from our intellect and talent, skill, and creativity, habitually.

and thats my entire point

its stupid that this is even being brought up in a conversation to judge one's ability to find good music. Again, going back to the tweet, there are a lot more artists with a more extensive catalog than mars that never won. Does that lessen the impact of the music? No

I've heard exactly one Sam Smith song...and i thought it was Tank that made it

I've heard exactly one Ed Sheeran song...and thats probably his biggest song to date

I listen to people that look like me (sans Michael Buble...his christmas cd goes) and overwhelming majority of the time.

i dont disagree with anything here

My initial post in this thread today had nothing to do with the tweet, cuz i've never seen the tweet. I was just adding my own input to what the thread title said.

this dude

man watch the damn clip

I understand Black peoples frustration here and to write the sista off and discount what she said because Bruno is your fave is just wack

I love Beyonce but I did a full ass critique on why lemonade was a capitalistic wet dream.

Blind fandom is wack

Niggas dick ride so much they will never admit to anything negative about their favorite artist.
