Yes.........and no.
The biggest problem with the Barksdale crew was that Stringer and Avon couldn't get on the same page.
Both of them had different agendas..........and their egos played a part in their downfall.
Hated String for what he did to D'Angelo, but......if Avon had listened to him......they'd be able to do everything String envisioned.
Simply because Slim Charles and the people with him could've taken out Marlo's whole crew at the rim shop.
But because Stringer worked with Bunny Colvin to get Avon out of the way........Slim wasn't able to get the word from Avon to act on it because the cops had already raided Avon's spot:
So, yeah........there's always gonna be a Marlo..........but they could've easily taken him out and gone back to business as usual.
Stringer was shown to be wrong and full of hubris at every turn.
Avon's "not hard enough for this game and not smart enough for the game out there" speech was definitive.
There is no conflict. Avon won and is still shown to be king (paid tribute by Marlo, runs things from Jail, Slim keeping his seat warm) while Stringer is gunned down both figuratively by his business partners and literally the streets.
