I just got around to watching this. I like it so far. Only thing that bugs me is the use of modern music in the soundtrack. It's retarded. That and the over the top gay shit, but that's HBO for you.

They haven't confirmed it, but from what I seen online, if they do make a second season, it's unlikely it will come out before 2022. Apparently, the first season covers all the source material, so if there is a second season, they'll have to write it from scratch.

That's par for the course for gothic horror. Shit is a lot wierder than your standard monster movies and slasher flicks, so it takes more exposition.
