However, despite some performance criticisms, DC's most aggravating villain problem does not lie solely with their characterizations, but rather the sheer quantity of antagonists. In other words, there are simply too many villains.

This overabundance of supervillains often scatters the film's focus. Having one central antagonist gives the hero a clear path and aids in thematic and dramatic heft. For example, the best villain of the DCEU is easily General Zod from Man of Steel. In that film, Superman and Zod's conflict is clear and makes their final confrontation that much more meaningful. Sure, Zod's compatriots (especially Faora) are formidable secondary villains themselves, but the antagonistic focus is squarely on Zod and his quest to restore Krypton. His sidekicks are simply distractions for Superman to have to fight through to get to him and aren't villains that fans are invested in seeing.

What's most tragic about the DCEU's villain problem is that many of these extraneous antagonists could have had a bigger impact if they had been given more screen time and attention. For example, Doctor Poison and Black Manta had the potential to be daunting main antagonists on their own, but instead, they were sidelined and seemed like afterthoughts in their respective films. This was most recently exhibited in Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984. Though a welcome presence due to Kristen Wiig's performance, it often felt like she was dueling with fellow villain Maxwell Lord for screen time. By the end of the movie, her transformation into her apex predator form (and the emotional finale of her arc) felt unearned and shoehorned. If Cheetah had been given the villain spotlight, her descent into animalistic evil and the souring of her friendship with Diana could've been so much more impactful.

 

I am glad that Patty Jenkins persuaded Snyder to peruse Wonder Woman as a polarizing hero who happens to be both a brutal, war-torn warrior from another time at times and a compassionate intemporal Christ-like peacemaker figure, as she leans to be in most of her Golden Age and post-Crisis mainstream iterations (save the New 52 and Flashpoint ones) : instead of just delving gorily into the former aspect of her 'Noble Savageress trope' personality trait.

Either way, Wonder Woman usually don't behead regular human opponents unless they turned out into unredeemable powered murderous psychopaths (like Ares in the films, or both Medusa and Maxwell Lord in comic books: the lattet one wasn't someone to be reasoned with unlikely the live action cinematic iteration, who was still affectionate of his son and thus empathically and spiritually reachable for the demigoddess) aside Cheetah, who for some guilt complex motivated reason remains untouchable no matter the iteration.

That was a little off-character. DCEU Superman assembles a balance of every classical comic book iteration with some strong Frank Miller-esque influence and even props from both the Donner era and Smallverse iterations. DCEU Batman does as well, with major Frank Miller-esque and Scott Snyder-esque influence and some minor pre-films background story props to the previous cinematographic iterations (save Bat Clooney) : for example, his earliest vigilant activities in 1995 according the DCEU Wikia blog coincides with the events of 'Batman Forever' but echoes most of the events seen in both the 1989 Batman film and the 2005 'Batman Begins' film.

But his early drafts on Wonder Woman?? Too much Elseworlds-esque. Diana has been exiled/sent into the Men's World as a ambassador of Justice, Love and Peace above anything else, not to play out Red Sonja or Xena in the mid-19th century Europe.
 
I was very excited for Geoff Johns to be involved in all of these films, but I will admit he has been an incredible let down. He has written some of my favorite Justice League, Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern arcs and I had felt he would take better care of these characters, but he is either very shitty at being a film producer, or he is bending to the will of execs bigger than himself.

I know that Aquaman film is in no way what James Wan wanted. Everything he said about his vision leading up to the production was unlike what we ended up with. Except the trench scene which was the best scene in the whole movie. The score was fucking horrendous. Wan has also been very hesitant to confirm he is coming back for the sequel. From everything i've read his answer is always "If the script is good, I will be there."

WW84 is runner up for shittiest DC movie. Id watch Suicide Squad 100 times before i watch WW84 again.
