Town & Country Apologizes to Monica Lewinsky After She Claimed She Was Uninvited From Event Because of Clinton

Monica Lewinsky took to Twitter on Wednesday to claim that she was uninvitedfrom an event because Bill Clinton, the former president she had an infamous affair with, decided to attend.

“[Dear] world,” Lewinsky wrote, “please don’t invite me to an event (esp one about social change) and –then after i’ve accepted– uninvite me because bill clinton then decided to attend/was invited. it’s 2018.”

Lewinsky, now an activist fighting bullying, added that the magazine insulted her “with an offer of an article.”

It was later reported that the offending magazine was none other than Town & Country, and the mag confirmed it by taking to Twitter to offer an apology to Lewinsky.

“We apologize to Ms. Lewinsky and regret the way the situation was handled,” the magazine’s account wrote.

Law Firm Announces Rudy Giuliani’s Departure Amid Trump Media Blitz: ‘It Is Best For Him to Resign’

President Donald Trump‘s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, resigned from his role at the law firm Greenberg Traurig on Wednesday, just one week after the former New York City Mayor unleashed a wave of scrutiny following his highly publicized interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity.

The New York Times reported Thursday that Giuliani resigned from the firm in order to focus all of his efforts on the ongoing special counsel investigation into whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.

“After recognizing that this work is all consuming and is lasting longer than initially anticipated, Rudy has determined it is best for him to resign,” Greenberg Traurig chairman Richard Rosenbaum said, according to the Times.

The resignation came after Giuliani took a leave of absence from the firm last month. The Times reported that Giuliani’s colleagues at Greenberg Traurig were not happy with his recent media blitz, during which he revealed for the first time that Trump repaid his former personal attorney Michael Cohen $130,000 in hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Giuliani’s critics said that the former mayor’s media blitz only created further legal complications for the president, even as Trump and his inner circle are in negotiations with Special Counsel Robert Mueller regarding the terms of a potential interview.

McCain Opposes Haspel: It’s ‘Disqualifying’ To Not Denounce Torture

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Wednesday called on his Senate colleagues to reject the nomination of Gina Haspel to lead the CIA, saying her “refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying.”

“I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense,” he said in a statement released Wednesday. “However, Ms. Haspel’s role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing. Her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying. I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination.”

McCain’s dissent isn’t entirely surprising given his history as a decorated veteran who was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five years and was tortured.

During her hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee Wednesday, Haspel was peppered with questions about her role in the George W. Bush administration’s ruthless interrogation program, which used tactics like waterboarding to torture captives into submission. Haspel vowed to never employ a torture program as head of the CIA, but would not answer questions about its immorality.

Cheney: I Would Not Discontinue ‘Enhanced Interrogation’ Programs

Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave his opinion on the “enhanced interrogation,” which some call torture, programs CIA director nominee Gina Haspel was grilled on during her confirmation hearing.

“I would not discontinue those programs,” Cheney said Thursday on Fox Business News. “I would have them active and ready to go, and I would go back and study them and learn.”

Wow.. Corporal Deferment Dick Cheney a devout coward supports enhanced interrogation torture.. What a surprise...

Fox Business Guest: Torture ‘Worked’ On ‘Songbird John’ McCain

Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, appearing as a guest on Fox Business Thursday, said that torture “worked” on Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — and that “that’s why they call him Songbird John.”

After playing video of former Vice President Dick Cheney standing by the use of torture during the Bush administration, Fox Business host Charles Payne asked McInerney about McCain, who said he would vote against Gina Haspel’s confirmation as CIA director because of her refusal to denounce torture as immoral.

“Well she can’t use it anymore because we have determined in Congress that it’s not legal,” McInerney said, referring to Haspel.

“The fact is, is John McCain — it worked on John,” he continued. “That’s why they call him ‘Songbird John.’ The fact is those methods can work, and they are effective, as former Vice President Cheney said. And if we have to use them to save a million American lives, we will do whatever we have to.”

In a statement later on Thursday, Payne said he regretted not challenging McInerney’s remark in the moment.

McCain spent almost six years in a North Vietnamese prison during the Vietnam War. His experiences in captivity made him a rare Republican voice to advocate strongly against torture.

The baseless claim that McCain gave valuable information to his captors echoes political attacks against the senator in the past. Politifact in 2008 rated a flyer claiming as much “Pants on Fire!” and said it was “strongly contradicted by many other accounts” the publication had reviewed.

McInerney last year advocated for the use of nuclear weapons against North Korea. Though millions of people could die as a result, he acknowledged, “they’ll be mostly North Koreans.”

Don Blankenship Vows to Tank GOP’s Chances to Win West Virginia Senate Seat

Despite losing the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in West Virginia Tuesday, Don Blankenship no doubt still enjoys some support in his home state. However, the former Senate candidate will not even try to persuade those who voted for him to cast their ballots for West Virginia Attorney General and GOP nominee for U.S. Senate Patrick Morrisey in November and he certainly has no intentions of supporting him himself.

“Don Blankenship will not be supporting Patrick Morrisey for U.S. Senate,” Greg Thomas, Blankenship’s campaign manager and advisor said Thursday, according to The Hill. “I think the one thing he is going to make sure doesn’t happen is that Patrick Morrisey does not become a U.S. Senator.”

Thomas’ comments begged the question: could Blankenship, the former Republican candidate, support Morrisey’s Democratic opponent, Sen. Joe Manchin, instead?

Manchin was asked about that possibility by Neil Cavuto Thursday on his Fox News show. Manchin said the two have not discussed it, but seemed open to the idea, even complimenting the former candidate as if to court Morrisey’s voters.

“Like I said, we’ve had our differences. But you cannot question the West Virginia Republican conservative roots,” Manchin said.

But according to Thomas, Manchin can forget about Blankenship’s backing in the general election.

“Don Blankenship does not believe it should be Patrick Morrisey. He also does not believe it should be Joe Manchin,” Thomas said, the Hill reported. He then added, “We’ve only just begun.”

For his part, Morrisey, the GOP nominee Blankenship is snubbing, also attacked Manchin during an interview with Fox’s Cavuto.

“The primary is over and right now there’s a clear choice between myself and Sen. Manchin,” Morrisey said. “He’s going to do anything to try to run away from his liberal record and try to pretend to be conservative or have West Virginia values.”

Morrisey added that he believes President Donald Trump will be a major asset for his campaign.

“I think he can make a big difference. He has made a big difference in West Virginia already,” the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate said.

WaPo: AT&T Paid Cohen For Advice On $85 Billion Time Warner Merger

AT&T paid Trump fixer Michael Cohen $600,000 for advice on its multibillion-dollar proposed merger with Time Warner, the Washington Post reported Thursday citing internal documents.

Trump opposed the merger on the campaign trail, and the Department of Justice is currently in the middle of a lawsuit to stop it, the Post noted.

AT&T acknowledged paying Cohen this week after Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for adult film star Stormy Daniels, alleged that the company had made the payments to the same shell company Cohen used to pay hush money to Daniels.

Combined with payments from other entities, Cohen made millions of dollars in the months following the presidential election from companies seeking his political and policy advice — seemingly an attempt to buy access or influence with the new President’s inner circle.

The Post specified that the documents made clear, though, that Cohen was not to spend any time contacting federal officials.

Cohen, according to the documents the Post reviewed, was hired to “focus on specific long-term planning initiatives as well as the immediate issue of corporate tax reform and the acquisition of Time Warner” as well as to “creatively address political and communications issues.”

The Post said AT&T did not contest the authenticity of the documents, which were reportedly signed by two public affairs executives at the company.

WH Official Who Dismissed McCain as ‘Dying Anyway’ Reportedly Had Tough Call With Meghan

The White House did not deny that an official said Sen. John McCain’s opposition to CIA director nominee Gina Haspel was irrelevant because he’s “dying anyway” in a closed-door meeting on Thursday.

The Hill first reported that Kelly Sadler, a special assistant to Trump and former editor at conservative outlet the Washington Times, made the remark deriding the Arizona senator, who is battling brain cancer.

McCain said he would oppose the nomination of Haspel over her comments on the U.S. enhanced interrogation program, stating “her role in overseeing the use of torture is disturbing,” and “her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying.”

“It doesn’t matter, he’s dying anyway,” Sadler said in response during a meeting with the White House comms team, according to a number of sources who spoke to The Hill and other outlets. The joke apparently did not land well in the room.

The White House issued a statement on the reports, in which they did not deny it was made.

“We respect Senator McCain’s service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this difficult time,” the statement said.

At least they’re making a bid for honesty.

Politico’s Annie Karnie reported that Sadler called McCain’s daughter Meghan on Thursday — but “it didn’t go so well.”
