McConnell might weigh in on Don Blankenship's racist ads—after the election is over

If you're looking to pin the utter ethical collapse of the Republican Party on a single person, you could make a solid case that Sen. Mitch McConnell is patient zero.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declined to fire back at ex-coal CEO Don Blankenship on Tuesday, refusing to say if the GOP Senate candidate's ads targeting his family are racist.
"Well, we're going to find out what happens in West Virginia tonight, and I may have more to say about that tomorrow," McConnell told reporters when asked if Blankenship's ads are "racist."

Translation: It depends on whether he wins. If the employee-killing, just-out-of-prison Don Blankenship loses the Republican primary in West Virginia, Mitch McConnell will pipe up with a condemnation of his overtly racist ads against McConnell's own family. If Don wins, Mitch will keep his mouth shut and help Don get elected to be a fellow senator, because Mitch McConnell is exactly that sort of person. Mitch is not a subtle man; Mitch would harvest his family's organs and sell them on the black market if he thought it would help push through another Supreme Court pick or two.

And this is indeed what is wrong with the entire rotten party: anything and everything is tolerated, from reporter punching to child molestation to selling political influence at your Florida club to being openly racist in political ads, so long as the one doing the punching or molestation or cash-pocketing or hollering about that “Chinaperson” over there can be counted on to vote the right way on the Republican Party agenda.

It's not only Mitch, of course. We wish it was only Mitch. But the man relishes his role like few others.

Smdh @ Cocaine Mitch that “man” is a unshelled tortoise and a coward...

AT&T Confirms Payment to Michael Cohen Firm Last Year

So let’s review: Stormy Daniels‘ lawyer Michael Avenatti put out a document with multiple new allegations about Michael Cohen. One of them concerned $500,000 Cohen received from a company run by a Russian oligarch.

CNN subsequently reported this oligarch was questioned by Mueller’s team over payments to Cohen, and The Daily Beast followed up with its own reportconfirming the payment.

Another allegation in the document Avenatti shared is multiple payments from AT&T to Cohen’s Essential Consultants, LLC.

Now AT&T has confirmed the payment:

Firm Connected to Russian Oligarch Reportedly Paid $500K to Michael Cohen Shell Company (UPDATED)

In some rather stunning news, investigators for Robert Mueller‘s team recently questioned a Russian oligarch over payments to Michael Cohen.

Per CNN:

Viktor Vekselberg, chairman of asset manager Renova Group, is an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, and last month the Trump administration placed him on a list of sanctioned Russians for activities including election interference. The purpose of the payments, which predate the sanctions, and the nature of the business relationship between Vekselberg and Cohen is unclear…

Investigators also asked Vekselberg about donations the head of his US affiliate made to Trump’s inaugural fund and campaign funds, sources said.

CNN’s report drops after Stormy Daniels lawyer Michael Avenatti tweeted this, speculating about the money being––in part––a reimbursement for his client

Yes, Avenatti posted a report that alleges Vekselberg sent payments totaling $500,000 to Cohen through the company Columbus Nova LLC, from January to August 2017.

The document says, “This was occurring at the same time significant questions were being raised relating to (a) the involvement of Russia and Vladimir Putin in the 2016 Presidential Election and b) the extent of the relationship between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump.”

CNN, for the record, has not independently authenticated documents appearing to show the payments Avenatti is talking about.

UPDATE –– 7:50 pm ET: The New York Times is now reporting the following:

A shell company that Michael D. Cohen used to pay hush money to a pornographic film actress received payments totaling more than $1 million from an American company linked to a Russian oligarch and several corporations with business before the Trump administration, according to documents and interviews.

Financial records reviewed by The New York Times show that Mr. Cohen, President Trump’s personal lawyer and longtime fixer, used the shell company, Essential Consultants L.L.C., for an array of business activities that went far beyond what was publicly known. Transactions totaling at least $4.4 million flowed through Essential Consultants starting shortly before Mr. Trump was elected president and continuing to this January, the records show.

Among the previously unreported transactions were payments last year totaling about $500,000 from Columbus Nova, an investment firm in New York whose biggest client is a company controlled by Viktor Vekselberg, the Russian oligarch. A lawyer for Columbus Nova, in a statement Tuesday, described the money as a consulting fee that had nothing to do with Mr. Vekselberg.

An attorney for Columbus Nova has responded to the reports today:

Columbus Nova is a management company solely owned and controlled by Americans. After the inauguration, the firm hired Michael Cohen as a business consultant regarding potential sources of capital and potential investments in real estate and other ventures. Reports today that Viktor Vekselberg used Columbus Nova as a conduit for payments to Michael Cohen are false. The claim that Viktor Vekselberg was involved or provided any funding for Columbus Nova’s engagement of Michael Cohen is patently untrue. Neither Viktor Vekselberg nor anyone else other than Columbus Nova’s owners, were involved in the decision to hire Cohen or provided funding for his engagement.

WV Man Whose Relatives Died in Blankenship Mine Disaster Voting for Him Anyway: ‘I Want an Honest Crook’

A West Virginia man who lost three cousins in a devastating coal mining explosion that left 29 dead told ABC News on Tuesday night that he would be voting for Don Blankenship in Tuesday’s senate race.

Here’s the thing: Blankenship ran the mining company found responsible for the disaster that killed more than two dozen people, and spent a year in prison for conspiracy to violate mine safety laws.

After his release from prison, Blankenship, who doesn’t even live in West Virginia (he prefers Las Vegas) decided to run for senate as a Republican. The Republican primary is Tuesday night, and the winner will go on to face incumbent Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin. Recent polls indicated a tight-race, with Blankenship just ahead of his two opponents.

But one unlikely voter that ABC News’ Tom Llamas spoke with is throwing in for Blankenship.

“Three of your cousins died in that mine disaster, and you’re going to vote for Blankenship?” Llamas asked the man, whose name was not given.

“Exactly,” he replied.

“I want an honest crook, and that’s Blankenship,” he added.
