Disney's Acquisition of Fox Expected To Close Next Week

"Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets will finally close as of next week. Disney began discussions about purchasing Fox in 2017, which led many to start speculating about how such a deal would bring Fox's Marvel movie rights, such as those for X-Men and Fantastic Four, under the Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella.

In November 2017, Disney and Fox announced an agreement for Disney to acquire the 20th Century Fox movie and TV departments for around $52 billion in stock. This agreement excluded the Fox broadcasting network and Fox News Channel. However, Comcast began showing interest in acquiring Foxand made a counteroffer. In the end, Disney reigned supreme by offering $71.3 billion, an offer that Fox accepted. Comcast pulled out of the bidding, and Disney began making preparations for the acquisition by getting approval from Disney and Fox's shareholders. The final deal's details left Disney with all of 20th Century Fox's film division, many of its TV shows and FX Productions and FX networks. The agreement also gives Disney a 60 percent share in Hulu. The Department of Justice approved the merger in 2018, after which Disney sought regulatory approval all over the world.

Although the acquisition hit a snag in Brazil, Disney ultimately got the approval it sought, which moved the acquisition another significant step forward. Now the only question is when Disney's purchase of Fox might become complete. The Wrap reports that Disney's official takeover of Fox will begin next week, on Wednesday, March 20 at 12:02 a.m. ET.

The most important question, though, remains: What will Disney do once it has the movie rights to X-Men and Fantastic Four? Is there a chance that the company will bring those properties into the MCU? Executive Vice President of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb couldn't guarantee that this would happen but did admit that it's exciting to see those properties return home to Marvel, which is also owned by Disney. This deal also hasn't yet affected the X-Men movie that Brian Michael Bendis began writing before the transaction was complete - but it's unclear what will happen to all in-progress projects once the deal is officially closed.

Although this creates a gigantic Disney that has swallowed up much of its competition, it also means that Marvel fans could benefit from the acquisition. Not only is there a chance that the X-Men will become part of the MCU, there is even a possibility of Disney creating new X-Men TV shows for its upcoming Disney+ subscription streaming service. This acquisition may not be a win for the movie industry as a whole, but it could make Marvel fans very happy."

'Guardians of the Galaxy 3': Disney Reportedly Rehires James Gunn

Months and months after being fired for decade-old inappropriate tweets, Disney has reversed its decision regarding Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. On Friday afternoon, it was revealed that the House of Mouse and Marvel Studios had changed their minds, and brought Gunn back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3 after all.

Deadline broke the news, saying that the decision was actually made months ago, following conversations between Disney and executives at Marvel.

According to the report, Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn, who had a hand in Gunn's initial firing last summer, met with the director several times after he was removed from the position. Horn was persuaded to change his mind after seeing Gunn's public apology and his subsequent handling of the situation. Gunn's case was probably also helped by his cast and peers, who were all vocal online and in interviews defending the director.

Gunn had already completed his script for Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has long been adamant that the film would use what Gunn wrote. Plenty of other directors were the subject of rumors, suggesting that Marvel was looking to replace Gunn rather quickly. However, that clearly wasn't the case.

The only complicated part of this entire situation is Gunn's involvement with Warner Bros. and DC. After being let go from Marvel, Gunn signed on to write and direct Suicide Squad 2. Production on the film is set to begin this year, and Marvel has agreed to let Gunn complete his work on the DC project before returning to the Guardians franchise.

Was it ever really confirmed that he’s writing Suicide Squad or is that just rumors?

Its definitely confirmed. It started he was just writing the film, but then confirmed he will be directing as well. Supposed to start production late this year.

So that’s not conflict of interest at this point? Disney allowing this?

Yep. Disney fired him which ended any contract they had. This opened him up to sign with DC for their suicide squad. Apparently there wasnt anything in DC/WB contract saying he cant sign on to any more movies.

Marvel had approached a few directors to take over guardians like Adam McKay and I believe they approached the director of ragnarok or the director at least made a comment referencing guardians as "gunns series". Seems like with the backing of the cast, fan backlash, and directors refusing to do the project, Disney realized Gunn was the only guy for the job and offered him his job back. Squad is already in the works though so they are allowing him to complete squad then begin guardians 3.

The question is will Gunn continue with a squad sequel after guardians 3 or will he stick with marvel?

I agree. Marvel has their own film division and an excellent team of producers. Working ahead of whatever is currently being released. If guardians is set to only be a trilogy, that would open up Gunn to take over a new franchise and theres been tons of rumors of nova getting a film worked on that he'd probably be perfect for.

Or he could start work on one of the many fox properties they will be getting soon!

Grace at Beyond the Trailer is saying he was never really fired and it was just a PR stunt to make Disney seem self accountable. That's why Gunn laid low and Batista talked all that shit because none of it was real.

I'm disappointed cause I was looking forward to a different director taking a more serious tone with GOTG3. I'm tired of Gunn and his annoying "we aren't really in the MCU" tweets.

Lmao. Marvel sent Gunn to DC to put the finishing touches on that shit lol.

Noah Hawley, the creator of FX’s LEGION and FARGO, recently appeared at SXSW, where he provided an update on his DOCTOR DOOM movie. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige met with Hawley about Fox’s DOOM movie. However, Hawley came away from that meeting with more questions than answers.

According to Hawley, Feige asked “Are you still working on [DOCTOR DOOM]?” Hawley’s response was “Should I still be working on it?” Unfortunately, Feige was unable to provide a “concrete answer.”

Additionally, Hawley shared a few details about the DOCTOR DOOM script. He described it as “a geopolitical thriller” that begins when Doom puts an impenetrable dome over his homeland, Latveria. The POV character is a female journalist who is selected by Doom to visit Latveria and share his story with the world
