The Official DCU Thread

It sounds good but Zack Snyders previous DCEU films wasn't all on WB meddling. He just a mediocre director at best
reminds me to go to the unpopular thread in the cinema

One of the most delightful crossovers in recent comic history is getting its own feature film. No, it's not the Amalgam Universe, cool your jets. DC and Warner Brothers are actually moving forward with a Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Turtlesmovie in the near future.

Syfy Wire broke the news on Wednesday morning that the Dark Knight and the ever-popular Heroes in a Half Shell are going to be teaming up for an epic animated crossover movie, thanks to the folks at Warner Bros. Animation and Nickelodeon

Following the team-up boook from James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II, this will be the first time the characters have met outside the world of comics. The four mutated brothers - Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo - will have a "transdimensional encounter" with Batman in the film, which will lead to them helping him take on his dangerous rogues gallery.

In addition to the announcement and first image, Syfy unveiled the all-star cast that will be participating in this spring's crossover movie.

The cast includes Troy Baker (Batman: Arkham Origins) as both Batman and The Joker, Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story) as Raphael, Kyle Mooney (Saturday Night Live) as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn (Grace and Frankie) as Donatello, Eric Bauza (The Woody Woodpecker Show) as Leonardo, Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) as Batgirl, Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Penguin, John DiMaggio (Adventure Time) as Mr. Freeze, Tara Strong (Batman: The Killing Joke) as both Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Carlos Alazragui (Reno 911!) as Bane, and Cas Anvar (The Expanse) as Ra's al Ghul.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doesn't have an official release date, but it will arrive on 4K, Blu-ray, and Digital HD sometime late this spring.

Report: Jared Leto's Time as the Joker May Soon Be Over

Today in a piece reflecting on the future of DC’s big-screen comic book movies, Forbes posited that while the studio is still moving forward with its Birds of Prey Harley Quinn vehicle and James Gunn’s sequel to Suicide Squad, plans for a Joker standalone film starring Leto and a movie exploring the character’s relationship with Harley have been put on ice:

“The Suicide Squad sequel, meanwhile, is moving forward as a sort of soft reboot to some extent, and is expected to have a new cast of characters and avoid direct tie-in to the first film’s events. Harley Quinn is not expected to return, and James Gunn’s script will be a new approach and rethinking of the property.

The Mad Love-type Joker and Harley Quinn film has also fallen by the wayside, as has the solo Joker project for Jared Leto’s version of the character from Suicide Squad. With Gunn on board as director, the film has plenty of room to bring a new flavor to the series and to the world of DC films as well.”

We reached out to WB for confirmation and will update should we hear back.

Given how the DCEU’s in an odd state of flux right now between Ben Affleck leaving and Henry Cavil’s future as Superman in doubt, the report about the studio deciding to pump the breaks on a substantial chunk of its potential Joker project makes a certain amount of sense.

While the studio attempted to begin building its cinematic universes out by focusing on its core group of iconic characters, it found surprising amounts of success with the unexpected hit Aquaman and is betting on Shazam to follow in its footsteps. With a catalog of characters as big as DC’s to pick from, there’s no real reason the movies have to center characters like Batman and the Joker, and considering how those character’s outings in the DCEU thus far haven’t exactly been great, it might be good to let them go fallow, if only for a little while.

I don't fault leto and he wasn't that bad of a joker. He didn't want to top heath ledger performance because they were good friends And his performance was sort of an homage to ledger. I fault Warner dc for scrapping a lot of key joker scenes in suicide squad and for nerfing the tone of the movie also joker wasn't the focus of the movie he was sort if a cameo and Jared let was mad at the studio for cutting his footage as wsll.

I wonder if Joaquin Phoenix is gonna be the MAIN joker now or if that's just a one off. If so, how would they even tie him into all the other shit they got going on

Phoenix joker will be a completely stand alone film not connected to this "DCEU". The rumor was that DC/WB would have a new banner for these stand alone films (Rumored name was DC: Black) and Joker was supposed to fall under that. Think of Joker being an "Elseworlds" story. Not part of whatever Canon they currently have, but just a interpretation/story of the character.

For real?

I wasn't too fussy about it... Then again there wasn't enough time for us to truly make a proper assessment since it was more on some cameo shit with the way they cut it
Leto's a great actor and I liked the gangster angle. I will say he tried to be too creepy and should have let the character just come out naturally, but I liked the general direction.

Did we ever get to see what was left on the cutting room floor from Suicide Squad? Never checked to see if there was a directors cut or the scenes they chopped Leto's joker out of

The Extended version of suicide squad had a lot more joker in it. They were really just extended scenes though, not so much entirely new scenes but there was at least one scene that wasnt in the original cut. Still though, a lot more was cut. Due to the reaction BvS got, they changed a lot of the story and reshot a lot of suicide squad to change the tone, cutting out a lot of joker scenes entirely.
