I agree with your first paragraph. I said as much in my initial post. How much he makes absolutely does have a bearing on how much he has to pay. I'm not even really sure how you're basing your argument. From a legal standpoint it matters because that's how the courts does it. From a moral standpoint it matters because you should be providing for your kids to the best of your ability not just meeting the bare minimum. What kinda logic is that. Just because the kids of some dude making 50k a year get by with a certain lifestyle, doesn't mean that's all a guy making 5M a year should be providing.
bruh, bare minimum would be a few hundred a month. That would be food, clothes, a small percentage of the rent and utilities needed to house the child. $1100 a month would afford a child a pretty nice, comfortable life as long as the mother is pulling her weight.
