Ex-NFL player Jonathan Martin detained after disturbing post led to school closing

Ex-NFL player Jonathan Martin was detained at a Los Angeles-area hospital where he went to seek treatment Friday after his threatening Instagram post led to his former high school closing for the day, a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

Martin was trying to check himself into the hospital, according to the person who was not authorized to speak publicly.

"The individual believed to be responsible for the social media post is being detained, however he is not in police custody," the LAPD spokesperson Tony Im told USA TODAY Sports in an email on Friday night. "The investigation is continuing, but rest assured we believe there is no threat to any school in the LA area."

Harvard-Westlake, a private high school in a Los Angeles suburb, was shut down Friday after threats posted to social media.

San Diego-based defense attorney M. Dod Ghassemkhani told USA TODAY Sports that when an individual is listed as detained, but not in police custody, it typically means one of two things: a psychiatric or medical hold.

“A psychiatric or medical hold means he’s going to be evaluated at a medical facility,” Ghassemkhani said. “If it’s a psychiatric hold, the person can be held indefinitely until they are deemed healthy enough to be booked into custody.”

The LAPD has not stated the reason for Martin’s detainment.

Psychiatric holds, under section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code, are utilized when it’s been determined a person “is a danger to others, or to himself or herself.”

The hold likely would only delay an arrest, Ghassemkhani said. If Martin were to be charged with making criminal threats, that could be either a misdemeanor or felony, according to Section 422 of the California Penal Code.

The shutdown of Harvard-Westlake comes a week after 17 people were killed in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla.

Students at Harvard-Westlake High in Studio City received an alert before school began stating the school was closed. Los Angeles police spokesperson Tony Kuey told USA TODAY Sports that officers from the department’s North Hollywood division responded to the school “after an Instagram post by a former student who is now an adult.”

Kuey said the department was unable to publicly confirm that Martin’s Instagram stories post was what caused the shutdown.

“When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide or revenge,” Martin wrote in a photo of a shotgun with shells around it posted to his verified Instagram account. He used the hashtags #HarvardWestlake and #Miami Dolphins.

A person who identified himself as Gus Martin, the name of Jonathan Martin’s father, said the family had no comment when reached via phone by USA TODAY Sports on Friday.

Martin attended Harvard-Westlake before playing at Stanford and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins. In 2013, he accused then-Dolphins teammate Richie Incognito of bullying, leading to Incognito's suspension.

Martin tagged Incognito and another former Dolphins teammate (Mike Poucey) in the post. He also tagged James Dunleavy, who attended Harvard-Westlake and was a walk-on basketball player at USC.

"Last evening, we learned of an Internet post that mentions Harvard-Westlake by name," Harvard-Westlake said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, and because the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority, we made the decision to close school today. We are working closely with law enforcement and will share more information when we are able."

Smh.. They let Big Weirdo off easy.. Those LA pigs fell for that Kanye shit again...

Haven't agreed wit some of his stances, but he's pbably one of the VERY FEW moderate republicans that has common sense

I've noticed this a lot actually. Repubs that be saying wild shit during their tenure be going on bill maher and shit whenever they're done sounding rational as hell. Like where was all this before.

I watched this last night. It went a lot better than I thought it would.

Idk what the solution is...guns been around forever but for some reason in the last 20 years school shootings have been slowly become an everyday thing.

Something is going on where these kids just ain't equipped to deal with life. Instead of fighting or waiting til graduation to get outa their wack ass town and away from ppl they don't like, they either killing themselves or a dozen of their classmates. And something about labelling every mass shooting a mental health issue ain't sitting right with me. Like yea you ain't all the way there if you go on a rampage, but the vast majority of gun crimes aren't committed by mentally ill people. And these school shootings are being carried out with legally obtained guns.

As a gun owner idk where I stand on the debate anymore cuz I see bullshit on both sides.

the NRA had mad discounts...did this trickle to the black members?

The only “black” folks who probably benefited.. Most likely were that schuckin’ & jivin’ negro who does those propaganda videos for them on their social media accounts.. And of course Sheriff Coon Clarke...

This arm the teachers nonsense is a deflection from the real problem and what we should be discussing. So don’t fall for their tricks. It’s the same thing Trump did a few weeks ago with the food stamp discussion, it’s just a thinly veiled dog whistle to his base to let them know that he won’t do anything to change gun laws.

he deserves to be locked up just off of what they found in his phone......good thing the parents and community are being more vigilant

Concerned about gun posts, dad turns in son’s phones. Cops find something else.

After the Parkland school shooting that horrified the nation, a Miami father told police he was worried about his son’s disturbing posts with guns on Instagram and Snapchat.

So he gave investigators his son’s smartphones — and they found child porn, cops say.

Miami-Dade Schools police early Friday jailed Sean Mesa, 18, a student at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High, on charges of possessing child pornography, as well as improper display of a firearm.

Mesa’s arrest comes amid the tightening response to online threats in the wake of the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland. Ex-student Nikolas Cruz, armed with an AR-15 and extra ammo, killed 17 people and wounded 15 more in the worst school shooting in Florida history.

Before the shooting, Cruz had come to the attention of local and federal authorities for his disturbing online posts with threats and weapons — red flags that were never investigated.

Since the shooting, police across Florida have arrested a wave of young people who have posted threats about violence online.

Mesa came to the attention of U.S Homeland Security Investigations’ Violent Gang Task Force, which forwarded his Instagram and Snapchat photos “recklessly displaying firearms and pointing them at the camera,” according to an arrest warrant.

Miami-Dade Schools Detective John Messenger went to Krop High on Tuesday to try to “engage in a friendly conversation to understand what Sean Mesa’s fascination with firearms was.”

A photo of Sean Mesa and his friend posted on Mesa’s Instagram.

Mesa, however, bristled — telling him “he likes guns and it was his right to post on social media whatever he wished.” But Mesa’s father, concerned about his sons’ posts, agreed to give police the teen’s two phones. The U.S. Secret Service examined the phones and found a video of what appeared to be a child under the age of 10 being sexually abused, according to the warrant.

The video had been sent to two others in a group chat, the warrant said.

Using other devices, Mesa continued posting on Snapchat. Another post showed a pistol on his lap with the caption: “now they watching so I ain’t stopping.”

“The latest Snapchat photos have students and staff at Dr. Michael Krop Senior High alarmed and afraid,” according to the warrant.

What is a bonus going to do if a teacher accidentally shoots a student trying to defend a class from an intruder ? It's a liability and that teacher's livelihood, home, etc are all at stake when the parents sue them.

I figure that the schools will have to take on additional liability insurance. Paid for by our taxes, of course.

these teachers are already stressed and disrespected daily by these bad ass kids. and this idiot wants to give them guns?

the teachers gonna be shooting up the schools instead of the students
