Official Wrestling News Thread

  • There were huge boos for the Saudi Arabia video package for the Royal Rumble.
  • There were no Main Event or Speed tapings. We were told the unveiling of the ring was a big part of WWE's plans for Raw on Netflix, and getting matches before 5 PM local time wasn't optimal.
  • There was production for Raw "only seen by the likes of WrestleMania" per those we spoke to.
  • Triple H's open, Logan Paul video wasn't listed on internal rundowns.
  • The Rock was hanging out backstage after his segments.
  • This week was Rhea Ripley's second one on one match on Raw in the last year, and third match on Raw in that period.
  • We're told the backstage area was a stressful one considering the importance of the show.
  • Michael Hayes and Bobby Roode produced The Rock's segment. There aren't usually producers for segments without physicality.
  • WWE did not use the blanket sound they usually use on the Raw broadcast.
  • Will Friedle, Kieran Culkin, Maryse, Kay Adams, Eric Andre were among other names at the show that weren't noted on the broadcast.
  • As noted, Becky Lynch was not at the show. Talent we spoke to thought Becky and Penta would be there, but that wasn't the case.
  • WWE could have gone much longer on the broadcast if they wanted to, as they do have a flexible "out."
Producers:

  • Rock promo: Michael Hayes & Bobby Roode
  • Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan: Petey Williams & Jamie Noble
  • Jey Uso vs. Drew McIntyre: Jason Jordan
  • Seth Rollins vs. CM Punk: Chris Park/Abyss
Writers

  • John Cena promo: Alexandra Williams & Ryan Ward
  • Jey Uso entrance: Drake Maverick
  • Hulk Hogan interview: Brian Parise

The early word on Netflix numbers for WWE Monday Night Raw is that they are great, but the streamer is still getting the numbers together. There's a lot of excitement in both WWE and Netflix circles about the numbers, so we'll see when they release them how excited they really are.

Raw is listed as #1 on Netflix currently.

We heard from a lot of entertainment industry types who attended the taping and were amazed at how into everything the live crowd was, given Los Angeles has the reputation for being a late arriving and early exiting crowd, but as they were truly paying attention to the live WWE experience, they were seeing fans who were invested in everything and were there until the bitter end.

For those who have asked, we are told there were no injuries last night. It would appear CM Punk was selling after his match with Seth Rollins.

For those who have asked about this, Becky Lynch was not there and was not factored into creative for the show. There are a lot of names, including Becky, who will be returning in future weeks and WWE wants to make the most out of maximizing those moments and introducing those characters to the Netflix crowd.

It's a new world and last night's show was as much an infomercial to introduce new viewers to the world of WWE as much as anything else - and that was very much by design, right down to the formula of using older names (The Rock, Undertaker, etc.) as a way to give the current stars the rub of importance for viewers who aren't keenly aware of the week to week stories but know who the major players of the past have been.

Internally, there was a lot of praise for Joe Tessitore, Big E and Wade Barrett for their work on the Raw Post Game Show.

There were also a lot of people internally impressed with the level of a pop Tiffany Stratton received last night.

Add Kieran Culkin and Kelly Osbourne to the list of celebrities in attendance last night.

Former WWE star CJ "Lana" Perry was seen out with a number of WWE stars after the show, but I haven't heard she was at Raw.

Lana wasn't at Raw because she was watching it on tv so must of been at the hotel.

He proved that there is a wrong way to incorporate the IWC

And

Michael Cole proved last night that there is a right way.
It was like listening to someone reading the r/njpw page on reddit. Very insufferable.

Doing all that whilst Rocky was on desk (a vp of both aew and njpw) knowing japanese companies don't play that disrespect shit was a crazy own goal.

He was tweaking. Did too much during KENNY OMEGA'S RETURN MATCH.

Made the shit almost unlistenable to in english.
He was trying to sell the story that Kidd & Omega wanted to tell.. But a certain billionaire got in feelings over being called a “money mark”.. And NJPW doesn’t want to offend AEW & TK.. So Chris got thrown under the bus…

Well this isn't true.

Charlton is known for big leaguing other promotions on comms. He does it to NOAH, AJPW and Dragongate all the time.

Charlton has been taking crazy digs at AEW the entire year. This was just his magnum opus. He flew way too close to the sun.

Again, he did it all whilst Rocky Romero (an AEW & NJPW VP) was on the desk. Rocky and Walker tried to reign him in. NJPW has historically taken their partnerships VERY seriously so that level of disrespect on comms from one of their office employees to a business partner without clearing it first was always going to end this way.

He was just extremely unprofessional.
