Hearn: With My War Chest - I'll Build Biggest Stable Ever in U.S.
Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom is looking put together a massive stable in the United States - with the recently announced venture with Perform Group.
Hearn announced an eight year deal with Perform Group - worth a reported $1 billion - as the British promoter will stage 16 exclusive events per year in the United States for DAZN, which is Perform Group's streaming service.
According to numerous sources, only two of those years are actually guaranteed in that eight year pact.
Hearn is moving very quickly with is invasion of America.
The British promoter has already opened up a fully staffed office in New York City.
And he's already begun to contact numerous boxers with multi-fight offers to join his stable.
Fighters like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Deontay Wilder, Keith Thurman, Adrien Broner, Andrzej Fonfara, Adam Kownacki and several others have have either confirmed Hearn's approach or refused to provide details of their discussions.
With the high amount of money in Hearn's grasp - he intends to put together the "biggest stable" ever seen on American soil.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Hearn to The Daily Telegraph.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to build an unrivalled stable in world boxing. When we came to the US, we really needed a platform that would give us the volume of dates we needed to grow, and we needed a huge war chest to go out and get the very best fighters in the US.
“My job is to put the biggest fights on DAZN in the US, and build the biggest stable of fighters ever seen in the US. With the war chest I’ve got, I have every opportunity to do it. There is no excuse.
“All the promoters in the US want us to fail. Everyone will say it’s a new platform and it might not work. And I could see the argument, but not with the amount of money I have to spend.”
Sampson Files Lawsuit Against Benavidez, Arum, Top Rank, Keane
By Rick Reeno
The legal battle has begun, with respect to the promotional contract of WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez.
Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing has officially filed a lawsuit in the Southern District Court of Florida - against Benavidez, Top Rank, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, and boxing manager/adviser Billy Keane.
In the complaint filed by Lewkowicz's legal team and obtained by BoxingScene.com, it's stated that Benavidez was scheduled to fight Matt Korobov in a Shotwime televised fight on July 28th in Los Angeles.
Sampson Boxing paid Benavidez an advance of $50,000 for training expenses for the fight with Korobov.
Sampson Boxing claims that on or about May 18th of this year, Keane convinced Benavidez to accompany him for a meeting with Arum to discuss a new promotional contract with Top Rank.
On or about May 18, Arum allegedly contacted Lewkowicz and allegedly told him that his promotional agreement with Benavidez was "weak" and "unenforceable" - and that Benavidez had signed a new promotional contract with Top Rank. Arum then allegedly offered Lewkowicz a sum of money to co-promote Benavidez under the new agreement with Top Rank.
It's claimed in the documents that Arum paid Benavidez an advance of $250,000 as part of his new deal with Top Rank.
It's being claimed that Arum, Top Rank and Keane had conspired to interfere with Benavidez's contractual agreement with Sampson Boxing.
Benavidez (20-0, 17 KOs) signed a new promotional contract with Lewkowicz in November of 2017 - and that contract, according to the documents attached to the filed complaint, is valid until 2021.
As BoxingScene reported last month, the World Boxing Council has ordered immediate negotiations between Benavidez and top contender Anthony Dirrell (32-1-1, 24 KOs). A purse bid has been set for Friday June 22.
Benavidez retained the world title back in February, when he won a twelve round unanimous decision in a rematch with Ronald Gavril.
Gennady Golovkin is Stripped of The IBF World Title
By Keith Idec
The IBF stripped Gennady Golovkin of its middleweight title Wednesday.
The Springfield, New Jersey-based sanctioning organization ruled to take Golovkin’s 160-pound championship from him because Golovkin didn’t adhere to the stipulations of the exception the IBF granted before he fought Vanes Martirosyan on May 5 in Carson, California. The IBF didn’t sanction Golovkin-Martirosyan as a title bout, but allowed Golovkin to keep its middleweight title.
As part of that agreement, the IBF ordered Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, to begin negotiations with Lou DiBella, the promoter for mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko, on May 7. The IBF also stipulated that Golovkin had to make his mandatory defense against Derevyanchenko within 90 days of May 5, or by August 3.
Golovkin requested another exception during a hearing with the IBF on May 22 at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey. Golovkin, who still owns the WBA, WBC and IBO middleweight titles, attended that hearing in part to let the IBF know how important it is to him to keep all the titles he has won in the ring.
The IBF informed the promoters of Golovkin and Derevyanchenko of its decision Wednesday afternoon. The IBF had until Wednesday to rule whether Golovkin could move forward with another fight, possibly a lucrative pay-per-view rematch against Canelo Alvarez, without having to first make his mandatory defense versus Derevyanchenko.
The IBF next is expected to order a bout between the top-ranked Derevyanchenko and the next available contender in its middleweight rankings.
The No. 2 spot in its rankings is vacant. Daniel Jacobs is ranked No. 3 by the IBF, but Derevyanchenko and Jacobs are trained by the same man, Andre Rozier.
If Jacobs (34-2, 29 KOs) passes on fighting Derevyanchenko for the IBF’s vacant championship, a fight against Derevyanchenko then would be offered to fourth-ranked Jermall Charlo (27-0, 21 KOs).
The 32-year-old Derevyanchenko is considered a high-risk, low-reward proposition for Golovkin, particularly at the point in the 36-year-old champion’s career at which he is trying to maximize his earning potential. The unbeaten Ukrainian has limited professional experience (12-0, 10 KOs), but is commonly considered one of the top 10 middleweights in boxing.
For Golovkin, battling Alvarez again isn’t nearly the foregone conclusion it appeared to be when Golovkin attended the IBF’s hearing two weeks ago.
Negotiations between Loeffler and Alvarez’s handlers at Golden Boy Promotions stalled two days later because Golovkin requested more money, a 50-50 split, than he accepted in the initial deal for their rematch. That fight, scheduled for May 5 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, was canceled because the Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Alvarez for six months for failing two performance-enhancing drug tests in February.
Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter, told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that he is willing to give Golovkin a 60-40 split to fight Alvarez again September 15 at T-Mobile Arena. The Mexican superstar’s suspension should end after August 17 because it is retroactive to the date of the first of Alvarez’s two positive tests for clenbuterol (February 17).
De La Hoya also said Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) has “moved on” and will fight someone else September 15.
De La Hoya has mentioned Saunders (26-0, 12 KOs) and Jacobs as potential replacements for Golovkin, who’s furious because Alvarez tested positive and ruined their rematch. Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions’ president, made an offer to Eddie Hearn, Jacobs’ promoter, on Tuesday for an Alvarez-Jacobs fight September 15.
IBF Explain Their Decision To Strip Gennady Golovkin of Title
By International Boxing Federation
After a lengthy review and period of deliberation the International Boxing Federation has vacated the IBF Middleweight title held by Gennady Golovkin since October 17, 2015, as a result of Golovkin not accepting one of the conditions put forth by the organization to grant him the Exception to Regulations to fight Vanes Martirosyan on May 5, 2018 which was not sanctioned by the IBF.
On April 20, 2018, the IBF received the request for an Exception to Regulations from the Golovkin camp to participate in the unsanctioned contest against Vanes Martirosyan on May 5, 2018, in Carson, CA.
On April 25, 2018, the IBF received a letter from DiBella Entertainment on behalf of #1 IBF ranked contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko indicating that Derevyanchenko had an objection to the Exception being granted allowing Gennady Golovkin to participate in an optional defense not sanctioned by the IBF.
On April 27, 2018, the majority of the IBF Board of Directors determined that the Exception to Regulations should be granted to Gennady Golovkin with the following conditions:
The Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan bout must take place on or before May 5, 2018.
2. Golovkin must agree in writing that he will fight the IBF Middleweight Mandatory within 90 days of the May 5, 2018, bout or by Friday, August 3, 2018.
Golovkin shall agree in writing to indemnify, hold harmless and otherwise reimburse the IBF for any legal fees or other expenses related to the granting of said Exception, including, but not limited to, the costs attendant to any resultant litigation. (As required under IBF Rule 11.F.)
On April 30, 2018, counsel for Golovkin filed an appeal objecting to condition #2 in the Board’s decision. Counsel for Derevyanchenko, the IBF Mandatory, filed a response to the appeal on May 7, 2018.
The IBF proceeded and assembled a panel of three IBF members, who are also practicing attorneys, to review the written submissions and hear the oral arguments of counsel for the parties on May 22, 2018, at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. The panel made its recommendations to the IBF and based on their findings and recommendations, the IBF approved the condition that Golovkin agree to fight the IBF Middleweight mandatory opponent by August 3, 2018 in order to avoid the penalty of losing his title under IBF Rule 5.H.
Since Golovkin has not agreed in writing to fight the IBF Mandatory opponent by August 3, 2018, a required condition for the grant of the Exception, the request for an Exception to Rule 5.H. was denied in accordance to rule Rule 11.I, “Compliance with Terms of Exception” provides, “The Champion must comply with all conditions contained in the grant of an exception.” Therefore, the IBF denied the request for an Exception with the condition removed.
Furthermore, since Golovkin did not agree to the aforementioned condition in the grant of the exception, the IBF had to enforce the penalty under Rule 5H for Golovkin having participated in an unsanctioned contest within his weight class and declare the IBF Middleweight title vacant. The IBF will identify the two leading available contenders and order them to negotiate to fight for the vacant title.
Golovkin Promoter: GGG Will Move From 50-50 To Fight Canelo
According to Tom Loeffler, promoter for IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, says his fighter is now willing to move away from a 50-50 monetary demand for a rematch with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.
The rematch was targeted for September 15, likely for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Earlier this week, the negotiations broke down after Golovkin would not step away from a 50-50 split - while Canelo was standing firm on a 65-35 demand.
But on Wednesday, the IBF stripped Golovkin of their middleweight belt - for his failure to reach an deal to make a mandatory world title defense against challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
Based on the IBF's recent order, Golovkin is ready to make a rematch deal.
Golovkin's decision comes on the back of the recent announcement by Canelo's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, who stated that the rematch discussions were dead and they were going to pursue a fight with Daniel Jacobs.
“Gennady would agree to come off the 50 percent in order to make it work,” Loeffler said to the Las Vegas Review Journal. “I’m thinking about all the plans for Triple G’s next fight, although the IBF made it a lot easier to not worry about the IBF mandatory.
“I’ve been talking to [Golden Boy Promotions President] Eric Gomez on a regular basis. I don’t want to criticize what Oscar [De La Hoya] said. It’s clearly the biggest fight for both guys and the biggest fight in boxing. It’s my job and Eric’s job to figure out a way to make the fight work.”
Golovkin was scheduled to fight Canelo on May 5th, but instead he blasted out late replacement Vanes Martirosyan in two rounds.
The May date fell apart when Canelo tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol - which forced the Mexican star to withdraw from the contest. He was later hit with a six month suspension, retroactive to February 17, by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
