Dillian Whyte's Deal With Top Rank & ESPN Nearing Completion
By Keith Idec

Dillian Whyte is coming to America.

Multiple sources have informed BoxingScene.com that progressing negotiations soon will result in the hard-hitting British heavyweight signing a lucrative, multi-fight contract with promoter Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

Whyte will make his Top Rank debut on an undetermined date. That fight likely will be streamed by ESPN+ from an unchosen venue in the United States.

Its deal with Whyte will be the second for a top-10 heavyweight in less than a month for Top Rank, which has an exclusive content partnership with ESPN. Top Rank announced the signing of another British heavyweight, Tyson Fury, on February 18.

The 30-year-old Fury (27-0-1, 19 KOs), the lineal heavyweight champion, is expected to make his Top Rank/ESPN debut either in June or July. His upcoming opponent hasn’t been chosen, either.

The 30-year-old Whyte (25-1, 18 KOs) thought following his spectacular, one-punch, 11th-round knockout of rival Dereck Chisora in their rematch December 22 in London that he would challenge Anthony Joshua for the British superstar’s IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO titles. That fight could’ve taken place April 13 at Wembley Stadium in London, the iconic English venue Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, had reserved for him for that date.

Whyte wanted that bout badly because the Jamaican-born, London-based contender is convinced he has improved enough since Joshua stopped him three years ago to win their rematch. Joshua beat Whyte by seventh-round technical knockout in December 2015 at O2 Arena in London.

Whyte is 9-0, including five knockouts, since Joshua beat him.

Once Whyte wouldn’t accept an offer from Hearn and Joshua that reportedly would’ve been worth at least $4 million for Whyte’s side, Hearn secured contracts for Joshua (22-0, 21 KOs) to defend his titles against American Jarrell Miller (23-0-1, 20 KOs) on June 1 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

When Joshua and Hearn went in a different direction, Whyte went on a tour of the United States to shop his services. He had meetings with representatives from ESPN, Showtime and DAZN, with which Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing is partnered in the U.S.

Whyte initially was asking for more money than any of those potential partners were willing to pay. ESPN’s increase in Top Rank’s budget for 2019 and a directive from the network’s decision-makers to become more involved in the heavyweight division eventually led to common ground among Whyte’s management team and those negotiating on behalf of Arum’s Top Rank Inc.

An official announcement of Whyte’s deal with Top Rank and ESPN will be made once his contract is finalized.

The excitable Whyte has fought just once in the United States since he turned pro in May 2011.

He stopped Malcolm Tann in the third round of that fight, which was part of the Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo undercard in August 2017. Top Rank promoted that card at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Crawford-Khan ESPN Pay-Per-View - Undercard Information

Before pound-for-pound king Terence “Bud” Crawford enters the ring to defend his WBO welterweight world title against Amir “King” Khan, a pair of 21-year-old wunderkinds — Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson — will look to steal the show in their respective co-feature bouts on ESPN PPV Saturday, April 20 at Madison Square Garden.

Stevenson, the 2016 U.S. Olympic silver medalist, will tangle with former 130-pound world title challenger Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz in a 10-round featherweight bout. Lopez, the consensus 2018 Prospect of the Year and top lightweight contender, will face two-time European lightweight champion and former world title challenger Edis Tatli in a 10-rounder. Tatli is ranked No. 3 by the IBF and No. 10.

And, in a special attraction that will open the broadcast, Puerto Rican star Felix “El Diamante” Verdejo will fight former two-time interim super featherweight world champion Bryan Vasquez in a 10-round lightweight bout that will thrust the winner into the world title picture.

World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is finally ready to listen to what DAZN have to say, World Boxing News has learned.

Wilder has been head-hunted by the streaming service for the past few weeks. The news comes fresh from the signing of Gennady Golovkin this week.

World Boxing News was already informed by co-manager Shelly Finkel that an offer was made to Wilder but dismissed out of hand initially.

“They made an offer but it wasn’t even worth considering,” Finkel exclusively told WBN at the time.

But it's still fuck Eddie Hearn

By Chris Williams: WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder revealed that he’s in negotiations with DAZN to hear offers from them about him possibly signing with them, but he’s not involving Matchroom Boxing USA promoter Eddie Hearn in the talks. Wilder, 33, says SHOWTIME is still in the picture as far whether he stays with them or goes to a different network platform.

Yo Daniel Dubois looked great last night, check the fight...

Only 21 years old and got 2nd round KO over Razvan Cojanu in his 10th fight, same as what Ortiz did last year... Cojanu had gone the distance with Parker for the title too...

Like they said in commentary I would like to see him get abit more rotation and snap in his shots, I think he could do with a little bit more distance in his shots too... But still great prospect...

Porter Sheds Weight - and Braids - To Keep Ugas Fight In Play

By Jake Donovan

Two hours and an impromptu haircut later, Shawn Porter remains the defending World Boxing Council welterweight title.

Whether that remains true by the end of Saturday's showdown with Yordenis Ugas remains another matter altogether.

The two-time welterweight titlist initially weighed 148.8 pounds ahead of his mandatory title defense, but managed to get down to 146.8 on his second try in order to avoid losing his belt at the scale.

"I don't know what happened (the first time)," Porter (29-2-1, 17KOs) said of initially missing weight. "I think I just got started late on the process (of cutting weight during fight week)."

With the scale drama out of the way, Porter is set to square off with Ugas, live in primetime on Fox TV (Saturday, 8:00pm ET/5:00pm local) from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif.

Upon his failed first attempt, Porter was granted two additional hours by the California State Athletic Commission to get down to the contracted 147-pound limit. The Ohio native—now based in Las Vegas—used the full time slot and even resorted to having his braids cut off in leaving no stone unturned.

It worked out for the best, as he is now prepared to make the first defense of the title he claimed in a 12-round win over Danny Garcia last September in Brooklyn, New York. The win marked his second tour as a welterweight title claimant, his previous reign lasting just eight months and just one successful defense before conceding the crown to Kell Brook in an Aug. '14 loss.

The stakes for Saturday's bout have significantly been raised by what lies ahead. As previously reported by BoxingScene's Keith Idec, waiting in the wings is a potential rematch with unbeaten titlist Keith Thurman, who defeated Porter in June '16 and will be serving on the live Fox broadcast.

Ugas (23-3, 11KOs) made weight on the first try, clocking in at a trim and fit 146.6 pounds for first crack at a major title. The Cuban native—who lived in Miami before relocating to Las Vegas—enters on the heels of an eight-fight win streak since returning to the ring in 2016 following a two-year break to clear his head.

Friday's weigh-in went a long way in boosting the spirits of an already supremely confident challenger.

"I’ve already won the first round," Ugas said of Friday's scale drama. "I did my job."

The next step for the 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist: upset the odds and ruin Porter's weekend—and future plans—altogether.

"I’ve been waiting nine years for this moment," states Ugas. "On Saturday night, we will hear “And the new”
