Less games in theory might help prevent more players for getting hurt or injured but players no matter what are going to get fatigued or get minor bumps and bruises because it's a contact sport. It's only so much any sports league that has physical contact can do to prevent injuries, that is part of the game.
If coaches and players think they can get away with resting a player against weaker competition without it hurting the teams place in the standings, not to mention it possibly helping keep players fresher against better competition, they are going to do it damn near every time.
