Surely you can do better than that, sir.
Back to our regularly scheduled program:
My honest opinion on this album? I like it even more than T&Y. I don't hafta skip shit. The interludes, the people speaking -- they're not necessarily needed, but they set the tone for what Lupe is trying to convey. As most of Lupe's work, it's lyrically dense. It's gonna take me a lot of listens and Google to get everything, but I'm ok with the treasure hunt. He's the only rapper that does it, so in that, I appreciate it.
I've said it before, if music is to be looked upon as an art form, then Lupe, for better or worse, is oftentimes an abstract artist. I don't care how "convoluted" it seems, there is always a method to his madness.
Nothing feels outta place. Songs literally "flow" into one another. I love what he did with the Alan and Jonylah Forever tracks, for instance. I know who Jonylah is, but I wonder if there's a similar backstory with Alan.
As much as I loved the message and the songs in the first half, the 2nd half is even stronger. Not in the abstract art way, but as far as the lyricism is concerned.
All in all, it reaffirms my belief that Lupe is lyrically on another level. He doesn't rhyme words together for the sake of rhyming. There is a destination he has in mind with his lyricism, which makes what he does all the more impressive. Even more than some other celebrated lyricists.
I was ready to pounce on ol' boy's album if it failed to deliver. And that's one of the things we endure as fans of this particular artist. He gets in his own way sometimes, and it reflects in the music. Happy to say that didn't happen here and he sounds focused and sharp.
Off first listen, I'm giving the album a 4.75/5. I have iTunes, so I'll have the official joint at midnight. Hopefully Target has the physicals because I'm supporting that way as well.
