Hulu announces ‘Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told’ documentary

The talk around this is interesting to see. Niggas trying to preemptively shame women and trying to act as if theyre so shocked at the long told stories of how wild it got when it came to the women and how they were being treated. Niggas worried about how men will be portrayed as if this is gonna be people acting out a script as opposed to footage of what was actually happening. People can't be portrayed a certain way if they never did certain shit so for all the men worried about how they're gonna look or be identified as being creepy or engaging in possible harrassment and assault they shouldn't have been doing whatever it was they did. That goes for the women too. Don't want your kids to find out you was wildin out back in the day...then don't do the shit.

That's easy to say, but it ignores context.

Straight men get mad when gay men hit on them. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. However, if a straight man, for whatever reason, decides to go to a gay club, it would be stupid for him to get mad under those conditions right?

Everybody knew what Freaknik was and knew what to expect. I don't think it's shaming women to say that they knew what they were getting into when they went there. If they didn't want to be groped, they shouldn't have gone to an event that was basically marketed as the event where groping chicks is not only acceptable but encouraged.

No one could have ever predicted this happening though.

Noooooooooooo one.

Today? Oh most definitely because everybody has a camcorder in their pocket and folks are constantly recording wherever they're at. You're definitely getting caught up if you tried some shit at a Freaknic-type of event today. Back then it was different. This was the type of thing no one could foresee coming back to bite them in the ass, camcorders weren't everywhere, it was only a few folks out there with them and even with the footage sitting on VHS or Super 8 tapes everyone involved pretty much wrote all of that off as something that would likely never be seen nowadays.

Thousands of people, living in the moment, doing whatever it is they felt like doing, and now they gotta deal with it damned near 30 years later after they've grown up, had kids, got positions in their careers and alladat. They're not even the same person as they were all those years ago (hopefully they've grown some).

This is gonna be a shitshow.

Well how about the fact that you just said "where women are expected to be groped and it's encouraged" being where it's fucked up to begin with and a huge part of why the event no longer exists. I'm not ignoring context I'm just saying that long before Freaknik and any othet events existed people know it's wrong to grope and sexually harass and assault women. So there's no real context you can give that would make it ok or acceptable. It never is and never will be. Just like there's no context to give to someone who is now worried that they might get shown twerkin on some random car. Don't want people to view you a certain way then don't engage in those activities.

Now this is actually where context would come in because if you just talking people partying, dancing, etc then yeah I can see that. When folks get to talking the sexual assaults and harassment then nah there's no "well it was 30 years ago so I didn't know it was wrong to grab random women in public". Nah ain't no giving that a pass and the niggas who did it then should've been worried about the shame factor then.

Also in context: There were plenty of those women that went down there with the full expectation to cut loose, act like a lil freak and all that, then go home as if it never happened. By assuming it was all a bunch of assaults and harassment you're taking agency away from those women that actually welcomed it and, in fact, fully expected it and enjoyed the attention. I got old classmates of mine up and down my timeline talking about this and how they went down there to get fucked up drunk, act like a lil freak runnin' around naked in the streets and shit, then went home. Some have posted pics of themselves down there, some have told stories about how wild it was. You know what not one has said??? "I regret ever going because XYZ happened to me".

I'm not saying SA didn't happen. Nope, I ain't saying that at all. I'm saying that some chicks went there to have fun and did exactly that, flashing ass, titties, and all.

But nobody said it was ALL sexual assault.

I’m saying this. Not everything was sexual assault adults can be grown and be freaky and be loose. But to act like a doc isn’t going to talk about why it may have been hampered is a little odd. This is for us by us we should be able to check ourselves without feeling attacked.

I didn't say anyone did say that.

The prevailing sentiment, however, is slanted towards that being the narrative, at least in this thread.

Again I think people just bringing up what they seeing on social media. I don’t think the doc is strictly about that it’s Uncle Luke and Jermaine Dupri. Let’s not get fake outrage.

I'm not assuming it was all sexual assaults. That's why I mentioned in my response to you that i get the "what the fuck" reaction from people who were down there just having a good time. My post was in reaction to the people not realizing how dumb it is to be upset that people who are on camera doing shit that we know equates to harassing and possibly assault may be looked at as...people who were doing shit that we know equates to harassment and possibly assault.

Bruh, you don't have to like it, but that's what it was. Everyone knew what happened at Freaknik, men and women. Again, I had conversations with chicks going to that and other similar events. They knew what happened and didn't give a fuck. They went anyway. That's why the context matters. Groping a chick walking by on the street is sexual harassment. Groping a chick in the strip club is just part of the experience. Freaknik was basically the strip club unleashed.

I completely agree that if you did some shit you can't whine about it when it comes out, but painting dudes groping chicks at Freaknik as being the same as dudes groping chicks under normal circumstances is disingenuous even if it's wrong in both cases.

Lol this is a bunch of bullshit

The name of the event says it all.

Freaknik.

Every black person from 13 to 30 knew what it was all about.

It doesn't mean niggas had a license to grope but going there and expecting not to be hollered at, cat called or approached is beyond naive.

P. S.
Women were grabbing niggas too.

There are far less victims than willing participants here.

Freaknik was bad in philly.

Did the ladies get groped unwarranted? Yup
Did some get stripped naked? Yup

Sad shit to see frfr.

went once and never again.
Couldn’t take what I was seeing along broad street.

So are you saying those dudes should somehow get a pass? Because all it seems so far is you trying to excuse behavior that you admit is inexcusable. Even in strip clubs you can't just randomly grope the women so that analogy don't even work the way you think it does. Also the fact that you think that dudes who somehow feel more comfortable harassing women in large groups at a public event is somehow not as bad as a woman being harassed under "normal" circumstances is some wild mental gymnastics. It's ok to just not try and justify or find the devils advocate side of everything. Some shit is just wrong.
