Duva Not Sure If Kovalev-Alvarez Rematch Will Be Immediate
By Keith Idec

ATLANTIC CITY – Eleider Alvarez is contractually obligated to give Sergey Kovalev a rematch.

It isn’t clear, however, whether their second fight will take place immediately after Alvarez’s seventh-round knockout win Saturday night. Main Events’ Kathy Duva, whose company promotes Kovalev, told BoxingScene.com early Sunday morning that she’ll give Kovalev some time to rest and think about when he’ll want to attempt to regain his WBO light heavyweight title.

“Knowing Sergey, he’ll definitely want to come back and avenge this loss,” Duva said. “But right now, after what just happened, it’s just too soon to say when that might be.”

HBO’s Peter Nelson had reserved December 8 as the date for the network to potentially televise a Kovalev-Dmitry Bivol bout if both boxers won their title fights Saturday night at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Etess Arena. After suffering three knockdowns and a seventh-round knockout defeat, New Jersey’s State Athletic Control Board will place Russia’s Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) on medical suspension for at least 90 days.

Fighting Alvarez in four months might be took quick of a turnaround for Kovalev coming off such a brutal loss.

“We’re gonna talk about it,” Duva said. “We’ll see. We have to take some time and think about it. I don’t think [the rematch] needs to be [immediate].”

If Kovalev takes an extended break, that could afford Alvarez an opportunity to make an optional title defense in Quebec.

The Colombian champion moved from his homeland to Quebec in 2009, when he launched his pro career. Twenty-one of Alvarez’s 24 professional fights have taken place either in Montreal or Quebec City.

The 34-year-old Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs) was down on all three scorecards – 59-55, 59-55 and 58-56 – when he landed a right hand to the side of Kovalev’s head that knocked Kovalev to the canvas in the seventh round. Kovalev got up, but Alvarez knocked him down twice more and referee David Fields stopped their fight at 2:45 of the seventh round.

Duva declined to answer when asked if this type of devastating defeat will permanently prevent the 35-year-old Kovalev from thriving at boxing’s top level.

“I don’t wanna take anything away from what Alvarez accomplished,” Duva said. “Sergey was dominating and the guy managed to come back and stop him. It was a great accomplishment [for Alvarez], so I don’t want to make those kinds of judgments.”

Ken Porter: Danny Garcia Better Be Prepared To Kill - We'll Be
By Ryan Burton

Former two-division champion Danny Garcia has received the benefit of the doubt in a couple of his fights throughout his championship reign. That string of good fortune came to an end last year when Garcia lost a split decision to Keith Thurman.

One of his close losses was a fight that was supposed to be a showcase homecoming bout in Puerto Rico. That fight took place in his parent's homeland in 2014 against Mauricio Herrera. Garcia ended up squeaking out a majority decision. The fight was close but many people thought the game Herrera had done enough to get the victory.

"I was one of those people. The fight was in Puerto Rico and the Puerto Ricans booed it. I talked to someone from Puerto Rico the other day and she said, 'you go got a big fight coming up' and I saw yeah we are fighting a Puerto Rican kid and she said, 'he ain't Puerto Rican,' Shawn Porter's father and trainer told BoxingScene.com with a smile. "That is what she said. She said he ain't Puerto Rican and I said well his dad is so she said, 'well his dad is.' So that is how they feel about it."

Garcia (34-1) will face Porter (28-2-1) on September 8th at the Barclays Center in New York in a Showtime main event. The vacant WBC welterweight title will be at stake.

The Porters have wanted this fight for a long and are approaching the fight with a kill or be killed attitude. Kenny hasn't seen anything from Garcia in his previous fights that he believes will be effective against his son.

"The only thing that matters is when we get in the ring on fight night and what happens in those three minutes or less or 12 rounds or less. We plan on letting it all hang out there. For us it is do or die. Unless he is prepared to kill us because we are prepared to do that to him - he is going to have come with another game plan because the game plan he used against Keith (Thurman) that ain't gonna work against us. The one he used against (Brandon) Rios that definitely is not going to work. Nothing against Rios but he has been out of his prime for a number of years so that is where we are at," said Porter.

Duva: Kovalev Will Fight On, No Desire To End Career Like That!
By Michael Woods

Main Events is a family shop. Company CEO Kathy Duva keeps the circle tight, and no, their roster isn’t beefy along the lines of the ones that Top Rank and Golden Boy can boast about.

Duva’s Main Events is a lean machine, and so when one of the upper tier Main Events crew takes a hit, the company isn’t as quick to shrug off the pain as some larger entities are.

So, yes, on Saturday night, after midnight, Kathy Duva wasn’t in a sprightly mood. Her main man, Sergey Kovalev, had been dropped three times and knocked out by Eleider Alvarez, who was the better man in Atlantic City, in a light heavyweight title fight which unfolded on HBO.

A loss to a Kovalev isn’t quickly shaken off, being that he’s Main Events’ main attraction. But it must be said, Duva has done this rodeo circuit a few times. Top dogs have been bit and the company has been forced to adapt before, in her 40 years in the business.

So, Duva took a little bit of time to lick her wounds. She conferred with family, and re-set her perspectives POV with some friends who were in town, people she’d expected to party with in a celebratory fashion, after the “Krusher” did the expected, and dispatched with the Colombian Canadian Alvarez.

On Monday, I checked in with Duva, and asked how the 35 year old Russian hitter is feeling.

“Sergey is good,” Duva told me. “We got him a CAT scan Saturday night just to be safe. He already told me he has no desire to end his career like that, so he will rest for a while and then we will make a plan to go forward.”

Much chatter centered on whether or not Kovalev (32-3-1) would soldier on after being stopped for the second time in his pro career, which began in 2009. So, barring a change of heart, it looks like there is at least one more chapter in the book of Kovalev’s fighting life to be written. Duva offered up her take on something that perhaps could be tweaked, to get him back on the win track.

“He fought brilliantly,” the New Jersey fixture said. “But his conditioning failed him again. Personally, I think he needs to bring in someone with experience training older athletes. I know that Tom Brady, for example, does not eat or train or play the same way that he did in his 20s. And neither should Sergey.”

I look forward to Kovalev wanting to take more punishment...

Wilder Makes Controversial Comment About Breazeale's Son

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs) has taken his rivalry with Dominic Breazeale (19-1, 17 KOs) to a new level.

Their rivalry first began in 2017, in the aftermath of Wilder's defense against Gerald Washington in February of that year at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

Breazeale fought on the undercard in a Fight of The Year candidate when he knocked out undefeated Izuagbe Ugonoh in the fifth round of a wild brawl.

At some point during the event, some words were exchanged at ringside between Breazeale and Wilder's brother.

The tension then blew over to a hotel lobby, where a scuffle broke out.

Breazeale, who filed an actual lawsuit over the incident, claimed in the legal documents that he was going back to his hotel room when Wilder and his entourage attacked him without provocation.

Wilder has a much different recollection of the post-fight events.

In November of 2017 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Breazeale knocked out Eric Molina to become the mandatory challenger to Wilder's title. Wilder fought in the main event, when he blew away Bermane Stiverne in one round.

Over the last few months, Wilder and Breazeale have been trading words in the press.

Wilder, who is clearly agitated by some of Breazeale's statements, has created a lot of controversy by making their rivarly very personal with a comment about Breazeale's son.

"We already know what Dominic Breazeale is doing. He’s trying to talk me into fighting him - which is not working. My mind is already made up on that Breazeale fight, and when it do happen I'm gonna make sure he brings his son on the stage to look the man in the eye that’s gonna cripple his daddy,” Wilder told Fighthype.com.

It's not the first time where Wilder was in hot water for making controversial comments.

Earlier this year, Wilder found himself under fire after appearing on a radio show and discussing his desire to catch "a body" one day on his record - indicating that he would not be bothered if one of his opponents was killed from fight related injuries.

Tyson Fury, who is very well known for making controversial statements himself, was shocked at Wilder's recent comments.

"Saying stuff like that is out of order & sad. To involve a child, I pray for everyone I fight to do their best & get home safely. There is too much BS like this in boxing," Fury stated.

Wilder and Fury are close to a deal to fight each other in November.

Dana White Admits Zuffa Boxing Venture Has Stumbled a Bit

Things have not gone exactly as planned for Dana White's planned venture into boxing.

White, who is the President of the UFC, was planning to branch out his company with a sub-brand called Zuffa Boxing.

In the last few months, White has been speaking with several known boxers - like WBC, IBF lightweight champion Mikey Garcia - with the hope of signing a few of them.

A few weeks back, during an interview with Mario Lopez, White promised a “real ballsy move” with respect to Zuffa Boxing.

“[Boxing is] so broken and so fragmented. It’s just, how do you do it? I’m still poking around figuring out how do I do this? How do I get into this and make it work. First of all if I sign a couple of guys, which I could do, I could go out and sign a couple of big stars — who they gonna fight? In my world, I have 550 fighters under contract, so I can make any fight I want to make. You have to have a deep roster to make great fights. So I wouldn’t have a deep roster right out the gates. I’m still poking around. You’re gonna see, coming up here soon I’m going to make a real ballsy move here pretty soon. We’ll see how it pans out,” White said.

The ballsy move did not come off, for one reason or another.

“This is one of those things I said I’m going to put my toe in, I’m not diving in head first. We’re still working on stuff. A lot of things didn’t line up the way that I thought they would in the boxing world, when I said we’re about to make a ballsy move,” White said on UFC Unfiltered.

“The thing kind of took a left turn, so I wasn’t able to make an offer on that deal yet. But when that deal does happen, and when it comes, I’m going to jump in.”

Joshua on Leaving SHO for DAZN: Business is Not About Loyalty!

In the United States, Showtime had aired all six of Anthony Joshua's world title fights - starting with his title winning effort over Charles Martin to capture the IBF crown in 2016.

On September 22nd, Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) will make his debut on DAZN - which is the streaming service operated by Perform Group. The service goes live in the United States on September 10.

Joshua will face WBA mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin at Wembley in London.

Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, cut an eight year content deal with DAZN - and the Joshua card will be the first even of that venture.

At the moment, Showtime has become the top network for televising boxing events in the United States.

Many had expected Joshua to stay loyal to Showtime, who took a big shot on showcasing the Olympic gold medal winner when other networks showed little interest.

But Joshua says the boxing business is not about loyalty.

He feels the decision to align himself with DAZN is the best move for his career.

"Business isn't about loyalty; it's about making the right decisions for your career," Joshua told CBS Sports.

"We are all working together. There is HBO, DAZN, there's Sky; there is all these other broadcasters, so it's not about 'I'm going to stay put because we are loyal.' It's like being in an abusive relationship -- you have to make moves for the better of your life.

"That's what I'm doing right now, making moves for the better of my career. [DAZN] is a good channel to be a part of, and I honestly believe that. But so is Showtime and so is HBO, Sky Sports. They are all unbelievable broadcasters, and one day I may have a chance to box on HBO because I haven't had that chance. There is no love lost. It's not about being loyal; it's about making the right choices in my career because it doesn't last forever."
