I'm saying it's not nearly as big a deal as he's making it seem, having been through it myself as well as every class in Detroit Public Schools after mine up to the present day. They ain't used to having cops and metal detectors in schools, we are. We haven't had a school shooting, they have.

You said it yourself you had to deal with the on premise cops being assholes.. in particular to black and brown students.. dude said the same in the video that was posted. He even went on to say that the cost being spent on cops could be used for counselors or people better equipped to deal with kids rather than having cops who dont even have that type of training.

Seems like a big deal to me and it seems like yall are on the same side of the argument. I'm not seeing where the disagreement comes in for you. Did you watch the whole joint?

That's mainly because they also know how having police in schools increases the school to prison pipeline and don't want their kids possibly caught up in that.

With that said having also gone to a high school that had full time police there it may have deterred gun violence inside the school, but still not actual violence as there were still plenty of fights and shit that spilled over. it still shouldn't be a permanent solution because we legit know that police presence inside school does more harm than good for kids overall. Especially Black and brown kids

I don't remember saying cops were assholes in my school(I'm being real), quote that for me.

We had counselors, school nurse, all the things he says some of these schools didn't have but had an officer. Our school didn't call the cops 'cause you threw a skittle in class, nope the teachers were able to handle shit like that as were the counselors and the rest of the faculty. They only called the school cop when it was critical.

i'll reel that one back in.. you never said they were assholes. I guess im just having trouble trying to figure out what ya beef with what Oliver said was.

What did Oliver say that makes you feel like he thinks it's coo for this in black schools but not white schools? Seems like he was against it in any schools like that

I liken it to the whole thing with opioids: When drug problems were an "inner city" problem, white folks gave no fucks. But when opioids invaded the burbs and now Kathy, Dawn, and 'nem are addicts turning to actual heroin to get their fix, suddenly it's "DRUGS ARE BAD!!! WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING!", laws get passed, doctors have been arrested on fed charges, and Big Pharma is in the cross hairs of congress.

In parallel, Black and Brown kids have had cops in our schools for decades and not one white person said anything about it. But now it's being proposed for their schools because their schools are getting shot up and we get think pieces describing how cops in school ain't the biz.

This is the same thing I was getting at with white parents not wanting their kids to get caught up in the school to prison pipeline.

Now with that said I also don't think it's wise to dismiss the concerns that come with having more cops in schools just because white folks are late to the party. Those same concerns still exists and still need to be addressed

But black schools before metal detectors didn’t have shootings. Black kids don’t wanna shoot the school up. That’s it lol

No shootings??? What about when Pookie and Man-Man got into it that one time and started bussin shots?

One-on-one shootings were the reason we got metal detectors back then. Shit, my school had an off-campus shooting about a block away from school where one of my classmates was murdered and that's what prompted getting ours installed the next fall.

Like I said before, we need a distinction between mass shooting of random victims and mass shootings as a result of personal beefs and gang activity.
