Do You Separate The Artist From The Person?

Like I'll never see anybody from the wire as anything else. Idris is always gon be stringer. Bunk is always gon be bunk, lester is always gon be lester...mayor carcetti or littlefinger will always be one of those 2 depending on what mood I'm in...

Once my mind latches onto you being something I'll never see you as anything else.
I get it I thought we were discussing personal transgressions and how u view their arts after that

Lmao I was tryna make an analogy off du's point. Like regardless of even if I liked your old shit once upon a time, now that I see you as this thing that doesn't sit well with me, there's no going back. If I happen to catch some of kelz music in somebody's car or something ima immediately think "he likes underaged girls" while I'm listening

I can. Im not the moral police. Alotta ppl w dope talents do fucked up things. I'm not looking for a hero jus wanna listen to some music/watch a movie and or tv/watch the game. Fuck a nigga personal life.

Played TP2.com last week .. Brilliant musician he is and that's undeniable

The same way I'll listen to stuff by Michael Jackson (rip) , Kanye or watch movies by Kevin Spacey... All brilliant artistes in their right but have questionable personal lives

My mantra is... The art produced by these people introduce me to them first as humans... Not their personal lives

I wonder why Kelly isn't incarcerated or even hurt by a family member of one of his abused victims?

So the fact that the music R Kelly was making was being directly influenced by his humanity, or lack there of, and his own life doesn't change those song meanings?

Why does it have to be "moral police" to say you don't fuck with somebody because of how they choose to carry themselves? Maybe it's just not wanting to indulge in somebody who is clearly doing fucked up things

I legit haven't listened to an r. Kelly album since chocolate factory.

Idk why people act like there aren't other good/great rnb artists to fill that void in your music collection

Music is subjective and people can choose to interpret it however they choose.

As far as r kelly i got into his music knowing nothing about him. Being a fan of the music aside also coupled with nostalgia, the memories during the times i listened to his music.

Mfs listen to certain rappers talk about selling drugs, killing, hurting people and we criticize them for NOT actually being what they portray. And they speak about it plainly.

Someone can hear an r kelly song and relate to it without it being about an under age lover. U would have to learn about the artists personal life to assume its about an under age girl.

I can dig frank oceans music and still think about a female even tho he might have wrote it for another dude...or maybe just trying to make a hit

If a mf cant separate it i dont knock em but at the same time others shouldnt be knocked for still listening

I don’t understand tha mentality of “everybody has skeletons in their closet so you wouldn’t be able to listen to any music, watch any movies, cheer for any athlete, etc etc”...while this is true there are definitely different degrees of “transgressions”...and pedophilia is, at least in my book, one of those things I can’t look past

Eh. To each his own i guess. Im jus not gonna go outta my way to pass any judgement. Lotta ppl do fucked up things n i still enjoy their talent. I can separate the two.

So wtf, when oj highlights come on tv, im suppose the change the channel cuz he killed a bitch. Or im not suppose to watch a athlete play a sport cuz he may have beat up his gf. Im not suppose to listen to r kelly cuz he pees on young girls. foh.

Yes all that shit is wrong, but if ya got talent. I can still enjoy your talent.

Lol

If oj on TV, yes, I turn the channel

The only oj information I know outside of the ESPN doc they did on him was stuff posted here

Bruh

You can also paint the same brush on thousands of entertainers who we might not even know what transgressions they've committed... Who you might personally support

And I'm virtually aware not all of Kelly's music have sexual lyrics in them or anything of that nature

When Age Ain't Nuthin But A Number dropped in the early 90s I was living in Nigeria at the time, a young teenager just getting into Kelly's music with my siblings and cousins... With no prior knowledge of his alleged misdeeds. Did I think the music was dope? Yes, yes it was... I have the album

Like I stated in the post you quoted... I don't give a flying fuck if Kelly is locked away for life, violently hurt or even dead...

Let's also not forget the dozens of artistes he's written songs for, collaborated with , produced and arranged albums for whilst these abuse allegations were going on... They liable too right

But IS he a great musician (his art) which is the premise of the thread?

Yes, yes he is...

Yes those people would be liable too. Mentioning them doesn't change anything in regards to R. Kelly. The "you can paint everyone with the same brush" is just a bullshit cop out plus you negated your own point by saying we might not know...thats the difference right there. With R. Kelly we do know. You can't hold shit against people if you don't know it even exists so the whole "You can paint everyone with the same brush" doesn't fit. Also doesn't fit because again, when the art is directly influenced by the artists life then that creates a different playing field. Look at an artist like Whitney Houston who sang love songs, songs about being happily ever after and all that bullshit yet we know in her personal life she was a junkie in a shitty marriage w/ another junkie and also wasn't that good of a mother...yet because her personal life and her music aren't interconnected it has no bearing on how people possibly feel when they hear her music. R. Kelly however writes, composes and produes his own music. Has repeatedly stated his music is inspired by his life...so when he's singing these songs about being with someone, being in love then it's hard not to think "Damn this nigga talking about underage women". The premise of the thread isn't is he a great musician, it's can you separate an artist's personal life from their art...

Nobody is saying you have to do anything, but if you choose to no longer watch a player because of that then cool. If you choose to no longer watch anything OJ related then cool. Telling folks they are being moral police because they choose not to indulge folks who've committed certain offenses has always been dumb to me. How are you going to tell somebody who/what they should enjoy or not enjoy because of what personal feelings it may trigger in them?

They're not better than what R Kelly put on the table. Do you think he's the best of our generation, if so then why wouldn't you keep listening.

What's funny about the R. Kelly shit though is, niggas will argue all day long about rappers being fake and how nobody should listen to them because their life and lyrics don't match...but this nigga R. Kelly literally pisses on a young girl and has decades long allegations of sexual misconduct and now it's "Personal life shouldn't matter"...

When a rapper says "i kill, sell dope, hurt people" there is no other way to interpret those bars

When r kelly says "keep it on the down low, slow wind with me, age aint nothin but a number etc" can be relatable to everyone not fawning over under age children and wouldnt be known to come from an alleged or guilty pedophile without outside source

That is why its easier to separate r kelly from his music

But if rappers WERE actually sellin dope and killing they would undoubtedly be highly respected even if the music was ass
