Yeah but if you think about it, it's near impossible to prove that something is true (or false). You might think something is a fact because it came from a reliable source, but it could still be wrong.
The most one can do is to do your best to take it from the most credible sources. Shit like "how many of x group of people have been murdered in a given year" is data that's collected by the government. Things like "there's no such a thing as a male or female brain" have decades of neuroscience research behind it as well as published, peer reviewed papers on the subject that are readily available (In fact, I just found out this week that I don't have to go through PubMed for published papers behind a paywall anymore, the individuals that wrote them are completely at liberty to send you their work 100% for free).
The hard part for the masses is reading it and digesting it all, so instead of doing the work and actually using their brains for a change, they would rather let someone else do the heavy lifting so they can simply parrot the soundbites that inevitably follow.
