The Official World Politics Thread

I agree with @ChicagoFigure . If people in the most populated states determine elections, it will end up being the same as the electoral college now. A few states determining the outcome. Then policies pass without care for people in rural states and they deserve to have a say as well.

On the flip side, I guess their senators would be their voice for policy decisions.

Basically, electoral college as it stands now ain’t it, but pure majority wins ain’t it either.

Y’all are over complicating it.

If the majority of the country are liberals, they represent the majority of the votes for President - regardless of where they reside.

Or vice versa.

It’s not a Good thing or a bad thing. It’s just a fact.

Guess what - some states have a large portion of liberals AND conservatives. Under a popular vote, every one of their votes matter.

The geography of the country is immaterial to this discussion.

State’s don’t drive a person’s political ideology. But their political ideology may or may not drive where they choose to reside.

They shouldn’t be punished for that.

America’s rural population has been shrinking for decades

At what point do we quit catering to them? You think they deserve an oversized influence?
Not an oversized influence, but some influence.
And urban populations don’t deserve an oversized influence either.

But like I said, electoral college is not the way to go, but neither is straight majority vote. As minorities in this country, we know all too well how it feels to be a minority with no voice.

But for President Trump, Ukraine has been an obsession since the 2016 campaign.
Long before the July 25 call with the new Ukrainian president that helped spur the formal start of impeachment proceedings against him in the House, Mr. Trump fretted and fulminated about the former Soviet state, angry over what he sees as Ukraine’s role in the origins of the investigations into Russian influence on his 2016 campaign.
His fixation was only intensified by his hope that he could employ the Ukrainian government to undermine his most prominent potential Democratic rival in 2020, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
His personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, has undertaken a nearly yearlong, free-ranging effort to unearth information helpful to Mr. Trump and harmful to Mr. Biden.

And Mr. Trump has put the powers of his office behind his agenda: He has dispatched Vice President Mike Pence and top administration officials with thinly veiled messages about heeding his demands about confronting corruption, which Ukrainian and former American officials say is understood as code for the Bidens and Ukrainians who released damaging information about the Trump campaign in 2016. This summer he froze a package of military assistance to Ukraine even as the country, eager to build closer relations with Washington, continued to be menaced by its aggressive neighbor Russia.
When Ukraine elected its new leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, on April 21, Mr. Trump seized on the moment as an opportunity to press his case. Within hours of Mr. Zelensky’s victory, Mr. Trump placed a congratulatory call as he was en route from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida to Washington.

He urged Mr. Zelensky to coordinate with Mr. Giuliani and to pursue investigations of “corruption,” according to people familiar with the call, the details of which have not previously been reported.
Four days after this first call, Mr. Trump said on Sean Hannity’s Fox News program that he “would imagine” that Attorney General William P. Barr would like to review information about Ukraine’s actions in the 2016 election.

Ive read suggestions of a ranked system of voting where u pick from ur fav to least fav and tally it all up

What i dislike about electoral college is it strengthens the 2 party system which i think fuels the polarization of politics. Also makes 3rd party voting pointless.

The country goes from leaning too far right to too far left and right back til mfs damn near flip the boat over

Yea

The fact that you can get 51% of the votes in a state and automatically get 100% of that state’s electoral votes is fuckin ludicrous and irresponsible.
But that is the system which is why I always write blue voters who live in purple and red states have to vote and blue voters in blue states the scenario isn't going to change majorly

The electoral college never was able to take into consideration parties because there weren't any when it was established
