Under The Gun Over Census, Wilbur Ross Stiffs Congressional Hearing

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross turned down an invitation to appear in front a House Appropriations subcommittee Wednesday — the second time in recent days Ross has dodged an opportunity to testify on his department’s budget.

Ross is under scrutiny for his move to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census — a move that the Supreme Court will review later this month.

In a letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science, Ross claimed his appearance would “unfortunately distract from the Department’s important business before the subcommittee.”

Ross pointed to the subcommittee’s refusal to host other Department officials to testify about the budget in his absence.

Ross last week, without public explanation, also turned down an invitation to testify in front of a Senate Appropriations subcommittee about the Trump administration’s budget proposal.

The top Democrat on that committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) expressed frustration that he would not be able to grill Ross on the inclusion of the citizenship question on the census.

At last year’s round of appropriations hearings on Commerce’s budget, Ross falsely said the Department of Justice “initiated” the request to add the question for voting rights enforcement purposes. The litigation over the move has revealed that Ross himself aggressively pushed for the question, prompting his aides to ask the Justice Department to submit its request.

Ross was grilled about the move again at a House Oversight hearing last month. His Department has failed to produce for that committee certain documents it’s seeking related to the question, prompting the committee to authorize subpoenas on Tuesday.

Congressional Dominoes: Luján’s Senate Bid Leaves Jeffries Free To Go For The Gavel

Rep. Ben Ray Luján’s (D-NM) decision to run for Senate leaves Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) an easier way to jockey for position when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) chooses to step down.

According to a Wednesday Politico report, Luján, Jeffries and Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) are expected to eventually replace Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC) as the next generation of House leadership.

That being said, Pelosi is the only one of the House Holy Trinity who committed to stepping down after a four-year term: Hoyer and Clyburn made no such promises, and may prove formidable obstacles to Jeffries’ rise, should one of them develop a yen for the gavel.

Sen. Kennedy On Biden: ‘This Is No Country For Creepy Old Men’

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) gave Joe Biden’s touchiness accusations his usual folksy treatment on Wednesday, declaring that “this is no country for creepy old men” (Cormac McCarthy, take note).

In a clip from CBS Evening News, he added that in America everyone gets “due process” and just because Biden has been accused of touching women in ways that made them uncomfortable, it doesn’t mean he necessarily did it.

When asked if he thought it was inappropriate to smell someone’s hair, he was strident. “Yes! I mean, duh!” he responded.

“If someone gets close enough to smell my hair, they may smell my hair but they may lose some teeth!” he added.

5 Most Bizarre Moments Of Trump’s Off-The-Rails Speech (Even By His Standards)

Even by President Donald Trump’s standards, his Tuesday speech at an NRCC event was completely off the rails.

Here are the most bonkers tangents he traversed down during the one-hour and twenty-eight minute barrage.

1) In an undemocratic turn, he urged Republicans to be “more paranoid” about vote tallies, especially when Democrats win.

“Hey, you gotta be a little bit more paranoid than you are. We have to be a little bit careful, because I don’t like the way the votes are being tallied,” Trump said. “I don’t like it, and you don’t like it either. You just don’t want to say it because you’re afraid of the press. You’re afraid of the press.”

2) He implied that Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) people are behind the accusations that have recently surfaced against former Vice President Joe Biden, as now four women have said that Biden was too touchy and invaded their personal spaces.

“The socialists are really taking care of him,” Trump said. “Our former vice president, I don’t know him well — I was going to say welcome to the world, Joe. You having a good time, Joe?”

3) Bizarrely, he said that the noise from wind turbines causes cancer (it does not).

“They say the noise causes cancer,” he said of wind farms.

4) As per usual, Trump demonstrated his affinity for jumping up and down on Republicans’ failure to repeal Obamacare, still clearly sore at the members of his party (read: the late Sen. John McCain) who had a hand (or thumb) in its defeat.

“We’re going to come up with a health care plan. We’re not going to vote on it until after the election, we’ll all promise it’s going to be our first vote,” he said. “Because we blew it. Man, I was fed a bill of goods, I want to tell you. Some of you I’m still a little angry, but not all of you.”

5) The former reality TV star seemed to have a basic misunderstanding of the logistics of his speech:

“Someone’s gonna leak this whole damn speech to the media,” he bemoaned…into the C-SPAN cameras.

Report: FBI Investigating Alleged Chinese Intel Activity At Mar-a-Lago

The arrest of a Chinese woman allegedly carrying malware into Mar-a-Lago on Saturday has “turbo-charged” an FBI counterintelligence probe into allegations of Chinese spy activity at Trump’s Florida clubhouse, the Miami Herald reports.

The investigation is reportedly focusing on whether a Saturday attempt by Yujing Zhang to enter Mar-a-Lago constituted an espionage effort.

Zhang’s arrest came after weeks of news coverage of south Florida massage mogul Cindy Yang, who was allegedly peddling access to Trump and his family while maintaining ties to organizations linked to the Chinese government.

The Herald reports that the FBI investigation existed before allegations emerged of Yang selling access.

Zhang – the alleged malware courier – allegedly lied to Secret Service agents during her entry attempt, and was charged with one count of illegal entry and one count of false statements to a federal official.

In addition to two Chinese passports, four cellphones, a laptop computer, and an external hard drive, Zhang allegedly had a thumb drive with malware on it during her entry attempt.

While speaking to federal agents, Zhang allegedly claimed she was headed to an event hosted by the United Nations Chinese Friendship Association. An event by the organization had previously been scheduled for the day Zhang attempted to enter Mar-a-Lago, but was cancelled following a Miami Herald report. Yang has reportedly promoted the organization.

A Yang spokeswoman told TPM that she does not know Zhang.

“Neither the firm or our client have been contacted at this time,” the spokeswoman added, after being asked if investigators had reached out.

The identity of alleged malware courier Zhang remains a mystery. Court documents state that she was born in 1986, and she purportedly told investigators that she flew to the United States from Shanghai.

The Herald reported that Zhang’s identity is a focus of the counterintelligence investigation.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman was asked about the Zhang arrest on Wednesday.

“I’m not aware of that,” the spokesman said.

The Yang story began in an unlikely way, with the February arrest of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft in a South Florida prostitution sting.

The massage parlor where Kraft was allegedly recorded receiving a sex act – the Orchids of Asia spa – was founded by Yang. That led to a Miami Herald investigation which reported on a series of spas she and family members own across South Florida, where sexual services are allegedly available.

At the same time, the spa mogul was also hobnobbing with GOP notables at Mar-a-Lago, while also contributing thousands of dollars to the Republican Party.

In an April 3 letter to FBI director Chris Wray, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote to request that the bureau “assess the risks at Mar-a-Lago” created by the presence of classified information at the president’s Florida clubhouse. House Oversight Committee chairman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) demanded a briefing from the Secret Service on Mar-a-Lago security.

In a Tuesday statement, the Secret Service said that it “does not determine who is invited or welcome at Mar-a-Lago; this is the responsibility of the host entity.”
