Kemp defends Georgia’s ‘exact match’ voter registration law

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is rejecting a lawsuit threat from a civil rights organization over the state’s “exact match” method for verifying voter registration applications.

The threatened lawsuit would allege that the “exact match” system has a high error rate and a negative impact on African-American, Latino and Asian-American voters, according to a July 18 letter from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law to Kemp.

Kemp, a Republican, said the potential lawsuit is a political stunt as he’s running for governor. He faces Democrat Stacey Abrams in the November general election.

“Nov. 6, 2018 is right around the corner, which means it’s high time for another frivolous lawsuit from liberal activist groups,” Kemp said in a statement Friday. “Federal and state law clearly authorize Georgia’s matching process for new registrants.”

The “exact match” law, passed by the Georgia General Assembly last year, requires voter registration information to match driver’s license, state ID card or Social Security records. Mismatched voter registrations are put on hold, and applicants are given 26 months to correct discrepancies.

“Georgia’s ‘no match, no vote’ policy has already disenfranchised tens of thousands of eligible voters and has had a particularly onerous effect on minorities and the poor,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, in a statement July 19.

The State Election Board plans to meet in closed-door executive session Tuesday to discuss ongoing litigation, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

They pulling out all the stops

They pulling out all the stops

You better believe it......a bunch of passive-aggressive voter suppression efforts in full-effect. Here in Georgia, the voter registration website was conveniently down for "maintenance" several times within the last couple of months

Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross Accused of Swindling $120 Million From Partners, Investors in Bombshell Report

On the scale of White House ethical foibles, this would make Scott Pruitt‘s various capers seem like child’s play.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is being accused of swindling his former coworkers out of more than a hundred million dollars. In a bombshell report published Tuesday by Forbes, the Cabinet official stands accused of cheating investors and former business partners out of several million dollars at a time.

From the report:

Over several months, in speaking with 21 people who know Ross, Forbes uncovered a pattern: Many of those who worked directly with him claim that Ross wrongly siphoned or outright stole a few million here and a few million there, huge amounts for most but not necessarily for the commerce secretary. At least if you consider them individually. But all told, these allegations — which sparked lawsuits, reimbursements and an SEC fine — come to more than $120 million.

Forbes chronicled one case in which Ross’s private equity firm, WL Ross, once promised it would rebate 50 percent of its hefty “management fees” to investors, but it actually returned far less. The SEC forced Ross to cough up an undisclosed fine, and pay out $11.9 million to investors.

“He’s a pathological liar,” a former Ross colleague told Forbes.

But. but.. Drain the Swamp...

Anyone who believes that this administration really cares about them and their family's needs, over being greedy and making money for themselves are living a delusion. I know a majority of politicians are in it for themselves but this is administration is on a whole 'nother level

Pro-Trumpers Clash With Ex-Trump Supporters in Rowdy CNN Focus Group: ‘I’m Not an Idiot!’

CNN’s Alisyn Camerota moderated a Donald Trump voter focus group on Tuesday, and the discussion became a free-for-all when the president’s supporters sparred with those who have come to regret backing him in 2016.

The panel was an even split of backers and critics, and Arthur Schaper started things off by lauding Trump’s performance in office so far. These plaudits were countered by Jeremy Montanez, who called Trump a bigoted “monster” while slamming the White House’s separation of migrant families at the southern border.

The panel ended up holding a conversation about illegal immigration and migrant parents who had their children taken away even though they tried crossing the border through the proper legal channels. This segued into a debate about whether Trump is responsible for the increasing levels of divisiveness around the country.

Eventually, regretful Trump voter Maryse Selit took things to the next level by saying people were “idiots” to vote for the president, including herself.

My issue with this president, who I voted for, is the fact that he has something negative to say about every other leader, but you try saying one little comment that’s negative about Trump himself, he jumps into a fit and has a Twitter tirade. We have a lot of — I have to be crass about it — idiots who voted for him, including myself at one time.”

Schafer took umbrage with that, shooting back “I’m not an idiot!” Voting for Trump “was a wise decision,” he said.

Things got even more heated when Montanez and Damani Felder locked horns after the former apologize for his vote on the behalf of the nation.

The chat remained heated from there on out as the group debated whether Trump is racist and whether his liaisons with Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal are of any concern to them.
