Maria Butina’s Gun Rights Group Funded Ex-Sheriff David Clarke’s Russia Trip, Docs Reveal
The Maria Butina scandal continues to grow in Milwaukee County, where it has been revealed that former Sheriff David Clarke‘s 2015 trip to Russia was sponsored in part by the gun rights group funded by the alleged Kremlin agent herself.
County financial disclosure documents obtained by the FOX6 local news channel show that Right to Bear Arms, Butina’s organization which touts aims mimicking those of the NRA, footed a $6,000 bill for lodgings, food and transportation.
The breakdown is as follows:
The NRA covered the rest of the $40,000 in charges racked up on the 16-day trip, which included a visit to Israel.
- $3,000 for a hotel
- $1,2000 for meals, which averaged out to $200 each day
- $1,000 for transportation with an additional $800 spent on “excursions”
While abroad, Clarke tweeted a photo of himself standing beside a Russian officer, adding, “Met earlier with a Russian Foreign Minister who spoke on Mid East.”
Aside from the trip, a number of additional links from Butina to Clarke have surfaced, from photos to video of the two together.
The Justice Department announced last Monday that Butina was the subject of an investigation, one day after her arrest.
GOP Lawmaker Apologizes, But Won’t Resign Over ‘Ugly,’ Racist Behavior In TV Show
After footage aired Sunday of Georgia state Rep. Jason Spencer (R) shouting racial slurs and pulling down his pants during a fake terrorism defense class on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Showtimes series, the lawmaker has apologized but refused to resign.
Spencer issued a statement on Monday, apologizing for the “ridiculously ugly episode” and defended himself by claiming he was tricked into participating in the fake class during a particularly vulnerable point in his life. He said in 2017 he and his family had received several death threats in connection with burqa ban legislation he had introduced in the state legislature. After a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in June 2017, Spencer said his fears were heightened.
“Now, the fears I already had became more intensified as the reality of my family being targeted by a similar, deranged, would-be assassin became even more possible,” he said. “Sacha Baron Cohen and his associates took advantage of my paralyzing fear that my family would be attacked. In posing as an Israeli Agent, he pretended to offer self-defense exercises. As uncomfortable as I was to participate, I agreed to, understanding that these ‘techniques’ were meant to help me and others fend off what I believed was an inevitable attack.”
In the segment, Spencer agrees to pose as a Chinese tourist, in which he blatantly mocks a Chinese person while repeating a host of offensive stereotypes like “sushi” and “red dragon.” He then repeatedly shouts the n-word after he’s instructed that it will make it easier to draw attention to yourself if you’re being attacked. He also pulled down his pants and exposed his bare butt to ward off terrorists.
Multiple lawmakers have called on Spencer, who lost his primary election last month, to resign, but in his statement, he said he would serve out the remaining five months of his term.
In his new series “Who Is America?” Cohen is reportedly able to trick Republican lawmakers into a slew of embarrassing scenarios. Last week, several Republicans agreed to support a program that taught kindergarteners how to use firearms.
WH Threatens To Strip Security Clearances From Ex-Officials Critical Of Trump
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that President Donald Trump is “looking to take away” the security clearances of former CIA Director John Brennan, former FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former National Security Agency Director Michael Hayden, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe.
All of those individuals served in the Obama administration and some served in the Trump administration, though none currently do. All have been critical of the President.
During a press briefing Monday, a reporter asked about Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) evidence-free assertion earlier in the day that Brennan could be spilling state secrets to media outlets in order to profit off of his access. Paul’s office never responded to TPM’s questions about what specific allegation, if any, Paul was making.
“Will the President consider Sen. Paul’s suggestion and call for the removal of former director Brennan’s security clearance?” the reporter asked.
Sanders appeared ready for the question, reading her response from prepared remarks.
“Not only is the President looking to take away Brennan’s security clearance, he’s also looking into the clearances of Comey, Clapper, Hayden, Rice, and McCabe,” Sanders said
“The President is exploring the mechanisms to remove security clearances because they’ve politicized, and in some cases monetized, their public service and security clearances,” she added. “Making baseless accusations of improper contact with Russia — or being influenced by Russia — against the President is extremely inappropriate, and the fact that people with security clearances are making baseless these baseless charges provides inappropriate legitimacy to accusations with zero evidence.”
