I was told Edelman’s result was triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable, and there are scientists analyzing it. And as to the timing, the test did happen during the offseason (a couple months ago), which means it’s not for any kind of stimulant. You might remember the rash of players saying they got popped for Adderall—the rules have changed now so that offseason use of stimulants falls under the substances of abuse policy, rather than the PED policy.

Julio Jones to be absent from Falcons' minicamp, GM says

Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones has informed the team he will not be attending mandatory minicamp, according to a statement released Monday by general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

"We have been in contact with Julio and his representation. We will not discuss those conversations publicly except to say we feel they have been productive and constructive," Dimitroff said in a statement. "We understand the concerns and thoughts from their perspective. Although not ideal, Julio informed us today he would not be attending mini-camp.

"We have much respect for him and what he means to our team, our city and our fans."

The team's minicamp runs from June 12-14.

There have been whispers about Jones wanting to be the highest-paid receiver in the league, although there have been no contract issues acknowledged by his camp or the team.

Jones had 88 receptions for 1,444 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Raiders cut Christian Hackenberg

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders won't be sending a 2019 draft pick to the New York Jets for Christian Hackenberg after all.

Oakland released Hackenberg from its 90-man roster Tuesday, three weeks after acquiring the backup quarterback from the Jets for a conditional seventh-round choice in 2019. Traded players typically must remain on their new teams' rosters for a period of games or past mandatory roster reduction dates for conditional choices to change hands.

New Raiders coach Jon Gruden liked what he saw from Hackenberg when the former Penn State quarterback appeared on the ESPN-produced Gruden's QB Camp two years ago. The move to acquire Hackenberg amounted to an extended tryout, with no strings attached.

The Raiders headed into their mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday with Derek Carr, Connor Cook and EJ Manuel as their top three quarterbacks. Like Hackenberg, all three were past participants in Gruden's QB Camp, giving the Raiders coach an extended look at all of them before they entered the NFL.

A second-round pick of the Jets in 2016, Hackenberg was the first quarterback in more than 30 years who was drafted in the first two rounds and didn't play a snap in his first two seasons.

Also Tuesday, Oakland signed free agent defensive tackles Frostee Rucker and Ahtyba Rubin, and waived linebacker Brady Sheldon.

A lot of money on the oline.

I’m glad our scouts can find players every year that can block and don’t have spend all the money there.

Dak ain’t getting paid what he wants

In acquiring Martavis Bryant in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers in April, Oakland General Manager Reggie McKenzie said the Raiders felt “good about giving Martavis an opportunity.”

It appears as though that good feeling may have left the building.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders are wary that a new suspension for the talented, but troubled, receiver may be imminent.

The team declined to comment on the matter to Gehlken but affirmed they are awaiting word from the NFL about a potential violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Bryant was suspended for the entirety of the 2016 season due to repeated violations of the substance-abuse policy. He was conditionally reinstated last year and played in 15 games for Pittsburgh with eight starts. He caught 50 passes for 603 yards and three touchdowns before being traded to the Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick.

A failed test isn’t the only way Bryant could run afoul of the league policy. Missed tests could trigger another suspension as well.
