The official COVID-19/Coronavirus Discussion Thread...aka I hope I don't get the Rona

Sounds like y'all understand the vaccines caused the leaders to over promise normality. That's good.

Maybe now folks will stop making the retarded polio vaccine comparison which actually did neutralize transmission effectively.

Except that's a gross oversimplification of how everything unfolded.

He's downplaying the impact the vaccines could have had by ignoring the sequence of events that led us to where we are now.

When the vaccines were first released, the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines were said to be about ~95% effective at preventing transmission, which turned out to be roughly true. Basically, the disease could still break through, but the vast majority of people vaccinated would have both a smaller chance of catching it and a smaller chance of spreading if caught. So, of course medical professionals believed that the vaccines could have gotten us to something like herd immunity. However, the rollout of the vaccines took a long time, and we had a lot of people refusing to get the vaccination. In all that time, the virus mutated, something we have known it could do for a long time, and those new variants became more and more resistant to the vaccination.

He's making it seem like the leaders were just selling a dream, when that's not what happened. There was a chance that the vaccines could have gotten us past COVID. Hell, there was a chance that early shutdowns, masking, and social distancing could have gotten us past COVID, but we botched all that. I'm tired of people talking like tried and true methods for dealing with outbreaks are the problem instead of the politicization of this pandemic and people, in general, refusing to be responsible.

Effective and efficacy are different. You said effective. They said efficacy.

that’s the first problem.
The second is the lies and ignoring logic.
they said “get the shot, go party” fuck a mask.
yea that worked well.

ehhhh
I’ll stop here .
my stance has been said many times.
Shit I’m tired of typing it.

lol

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. When scientists mention efficacy, they are basically talking about the degree to which something effective, so the words don't oppose in the way you seem to think they do. And at no point did scientists or leaders ever say that the vaccine was a greenlight to abandon all other protocol. In fact, they did the exact opposite. That's why all the MAGA fools were running around complaining about the fact that they were expected to wear a mask even after getting vaccinated.

Ok

You telling me efficacy and effectiveness is same?

you also telling me “leaders” didn’t say or even imply once vaxxed the masks can come off?

Vaxxed once
Then twice
Then a booster is needed?

you telling this is all different?

Everything works in a vacuum.
But when applied to the real world….yea that’s different.

but I said this earlier.
Those who opposed don’t visit the thread anymore.

Aint that fucked up.

Just crazy huh?

I just told how the two words are related. Efficacy is the degree to which something is effective. For example, a vaccine that is 95% effective has a high efficacy.

Yes, some places allowed for vaxxed people to take the masks off, but that was BEFORE the vaccine resistant variants popped up. Initially, the vaccines were pretty effective in stopping the spread. We saw the numbers go down quite a bit. Then the variants came out and that changed. Once the numbers showed that those variants dominated the cases, most places flipped and recommended mask use for everyone again.

Moderna and Pfizer always required two doses. That's not unique among vaccines. The Hepatitis B vaccine, for example, requires three.

We've known since the vaccines were released that they weren't permanent cures and would wear off in time. The hope was that enough people would be vaccinated and that COVID would be nearly gone by the time the vaccines wore off. That didn't happen, so they released the booster around six months after the initial vaccine doses were released because that's when the companies said the vaccines would start to lose their effectiveness. Again boosters aren't unusual for vaccines. For example, the polio vaccine requires you get the initial shot when you're a baby, and then you get a booster at like 6 y/o.

The problem is that ya'll are looking for something nefarious in how a lot of this has gone down, when in reality, this has just been a highly adaptable virus and scientists really have never had a solid footing for accurate information. Leaders have lied and made erroneous statements. That's true, but those statements aren't the major reasons for why we're still dealing with COVID.
