The official COVID-19/Coronavirus Discussion Thread...aka I hope I don't get the Rona

Lab leak hypothesis is a good example.

Whether u think it matters or not is beside the point here.

People were conspiracy theorists for suggesting it when the hypothesis was based off real scientists and virologist studies.

Fauci himself shot it down.

If we would have just said "hey man, Fauci is the expert here, kill all that other shit"

And just listened to whatever media feeds us without thinking for ourselves, well I mean, I think the problem there is self explanatory.

Your first sentence is the problem and I've heard that another time here.

If Rand Paul is citing reputable scientific sources with no political affiliation, with data to back it up, and u won't accept the message bc of the messenger, you aren't trusting science or even giving it a chance to due diligence.

That's why we are where we are
But it's not about the sources and data he has, it's how he's using them. He's trying to draw the conclusion that the gain of function research referenced could have led to the release of Covid-19 and in turn Fauci and the lab would be responsible for the millions of resulting deaths. That's why Fauci told him flat out he didn't know what he was talking about and that he was lying.

And people with no expertise cherry picking data and articles to present as proof is an even bigger issue than your messenger argument. People already distrust experts who could actually help and people like Rand Paul exacerbates the distrust and more people die.

Never said don't figure out for sure where it came from, but Rand Paul ain't the one I'm trusting to get to the truth.

But u don't know what his source is or what the data says. Bc of politics u dismissed it.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong. I'm saying show us the source and data.

How can u come to a conclusion without seeing the data?

Right but it seems u trust Fauci. Your only reasoning is he's an expert. Well there are experts who contradict him.

But if the guy who presents that information is someone u don't like, it won't matter to u.

I trust him over Rand Paul for sure. Paul just trying to score political points. Everything I've seen from Fauci has seemed fairly genuine. Even when he was wrong, it seemed like he was going off of the best info we had at the time. And when the info changed, he updated his thinking, and I can respect that.

And it's not a matter of liking somebody, it's a matter of credibility. Get an expert out there who's credible and has a track record of dealing with these things and I'll listen. Even Fauci said that document Rand Paul has was peer reviewed up and down the scientific chain and no one drew the conclusion that the information in that document could be deduced to lead to Covid-19.

Fauci even got scientific and said at a molecular level it is scientifically impossible that the research given in that paper could have led to Covid-19.

I implore you to watch the entire exchange between them and tell me who you believe.

I did watch the whole thing. And instead of saying "I trust this guy over that guy" I'm thinking to myself "let's see the source and maybe I can make up my own mind"

Bruh, if you can read that research paper and confidently draw the conclusion that the research referenced in that paper led to Covid-19, you're in the wrong line of work.

This is why we have experts and I think the distrust of experts brought on by social media and certain political figures has only weakened us as a society. Of course we don't trust any expert blindly, and we should have multiple independent experts as a system of checks and balances, but we should never give the same consideration to someone like Rand Paul that we would give someone like Fauci when it comes to virology and immunology.

U keep bringing up rand Paul, I'm talking about his source.

That study and the results of that study existed before rand Paul picked it up. Those people didn't conduct that study to help Rand Paul. Is he using it for nefarious reasons? Possibly. Do I care if it actually lends to the truth? Absolutely not.

It would make no difference to me who's in Rand Paul's chair, if they are citing experts.

U mentioned arm chair quarterbacks, no sources I rely on come from those. They are all experts or published by credible institutions. Everything else is profit driven mass media and political theatre getting in the way.

So what's the point in bringing the research up at all? Rand Paul is bringing it up to claim it led to Covid-19. Is that not why you are interested in it? If not, why would you be interested in it?

Many scientists claim gain of function research led to the pandemic. Obama administration ended gain of function research bc they knew it could lead to a pandemic such as this. Fauci pushed to continue it and got that granted when Trump came in.

I'd have to find the quote. But from what I heard Fauci even stated in early 2010s verbatim that risk of worldwide pandemic is worth the gain of function research.

Do u know that in order for that type of research to take place a lot of funds have to come Fauci's way? We are talking billions. Including other government health institutions.

Are u asking why I would care if gain of function led to this pandemic?
