The Downfall of Mainstream Rap

In my opinion mainstream rap got consumed by social media and everything about rappers now is based around “content” that’s not even music related. If you think about it most times now when a rapper is in the headlines it has nothing to do with music. The actual music became secondary and the social media engagement became the thing consumers now prefer. Even when rappers do interviews they never get asked about their music, only the drama or shenanigans they have going on.Think of it like if fans of the NBA or the NFL didn’t really care much for the actual games but were more interested in what players did off the court/field. Thats kind of where rap is to me and the reason why the music doesn’t stick and has declined.

the modern "mainstream" ecosystem at large is dramatically different than it was just 10 years ago, let along 20 plus years ago.

as far as infrastructure, what hasnt been consolidated has been outright destroyed . . There was once a point in time where there were no "major" labels .... just recording companies . Now there effectively what, 1 or 2? there was a once national constellation of black owned and or at least managed and directed radio stations... now were subjected to universal syndication... i can keep goin n goin but for the sake of brevity ill stop.

this is beyond a lack of creativity or artistic range... we don't even have the agency to platform that. this is the culmination (or nadir) of a proccess of corporate consumption that has been playing out simce the late 70s actually

Yall just throwing shit at the wall when the answer is very much simple.

Y’all constantly complain about it not being any good music out but never want to give anything I post a chance. Oh that’s right the mainstream didn’t tell they were dope. That’s the problem y’all letting the mainstream dictate what’s good and what’s not.
U have a point. Rap fell off when it stopped being regional. When south sounded south and NY sounded NY. That's how you had quality music like black moon, heltah skeltah, ugk, 8ball, C-bo, mac mall.....nobody felt like it was a formula they had to follow. They basically made music for their region or city and anyone else who caught on to it was a bonus. So basically the different flavors from each region helped promote originality. Now everybody just rap on trap beats for the most part

It’s still a bunch of good music.

It’s not just what yall want.
