Lies. Low fluid = insufficient pressure = clutch packs dont engage. Happened with my old dodge intrepid i had a leaking trans cooler line.

Auto trans have small clutch packs in them to engage the planetary gears. They need fluid pressure to work. Least you can do is check your fluid level.
