Welcome To aBlackWeb

Revisiting the whole Pound cake speech. A long read. Lets end this.

The root of the problems in black society was started because of white supremacy. Why are you afraid to discuss this? Talking down on black people is easy it’s like picking on the scrawny kid that gets bullied by everybody. Speaking on white supremacy is hard. Funny you mentioned black wall street because white supremacy is what destroyed that community.
so let me ask you......if they talked about white supremacy first...would they have built what they built?

im not avoiding it...not do i care about it, this is where we live. it is what it is.
my purpose and goal is to steengthen my people so we can stand up against it.

right now....we so divided....they can just pick us apart.
i rather fight as a unit than splintered confused groups.

so talk about it will solve what if we cant even agree if a black mans words hold more weight than a white womans word.

and since when is talking to black people hurtful?
didnt niggas do the dozens when we was kids?
nigga talked about ya mom and crippled sister and all. the fact you didnt have a dad....all the shit.

now...NOW...niggas hurt by words?

and no one still pointed out what words he said that was so condescending.

maybe i dont see it because i had a dad and my parents wanted something for me and wanted me to be something.

maybe thats it

It's just as useless when we say it as average folks, but the fact that people put more weight on Cosby's words because of who he is makes it particularly important to point out that he's preaching from a place that is lightyears removed from the struggle.

I'm not saying people who are breaking the law to feed themselves are doing the best thing, but I'll be dammed if I tell a man he doesn't have the right to do what he sees is in his best interest. Freedom. Liberty. The pursuit of happiness.

I work two jobs and go to school. I'm part of a writing club in my city. I'm involved in music projects with local artists. But I was also recently struggling with addiction, going through my own personal hell, and I brought my parents through it with me. I know how it is to be in that position and not have the capacity to fix your life on your own. With that wisdom, I can't reasonably condone the tone and approach of Bill's speech.

Also, while I disagree with 5th Letter about white cosigns always being a bad sign, I think the fact that Bill was addressing a white audience is important to keep in mind.

What speech are yall talking about?

Once again the pound cake speech was given at the NAACP awards.

Again, Bill said black people need to stop blaming white people for their problems and condition, and black people should hold themselves accountability.

How can ANYONE miss the irony of black people blaming white people for Bill's problems and the situation he is in???

But how did you know they didn’t address white supremacy? Yes you’re right we are divided and the first step to getting united is to identify who our enemies and not to be afraid to call out white supremacy. It’s not that people are hurt by Bill’s words moreso that his words were detrimental to black society it gives ammo to the suspects to further harm us.

bruh,,,,maybe we can talk in a pm later....but addiction and dealing with life is a bit different than what hes saying.
you went thru something.....the reason doesnt matter to us. it only matters to you and those who love you. its good you past it.
but the fact you said your parents.....kinda makes me believe he wasnt speaking about you.
trust me when i say.....i went thru something no parent should ever have to deal with...but i didnt need to hurt anyone in the process.

but what hes talking about is parents who dont parent.

he was speaking on people who choose to sell drugs....
i often said back on the IC...i understand those the need to feed their family....but when the selling crosses into buying $90k cars....and you still killing people and poisoning your people...at that point a person is becoming the local oppressor of his hood. why must he kill people at that point?

to drive a nice car? to get the bitches? what is he doing to help the community? give out turkeys or give toys on christmas but them kids dont have daddies because he killed them.....what about the other 353 days of the year? what are them niggas doing?

they are oppressing. but them niggas get looked up to. cosby helps with higher education costs and says step it up...and its a problem?

cmon ....is he not right saying $500 sneakers vs $250 hooked on phonics.....thats what hurts people? but is it true?

at a point people can do better and they should do better. do what you gotta do to get their without hurting us or ours people.....but then when you get there ....whats wrong with getting right?

I agree with the bolded, it's hard not to agree with that. The majority of black folks living illegal are not at that level though. Your view is really strong criticism for people who treat crime like a career. Most people behind bars are not that way, at least based on what I've read

its strong because my family did alot of foul shit.....things niggas should never do....tio our people...thats why i never wanted to be apart of it because im not built like that.
my cousin i just saw my last visit can tell me how the system works with drug convictions and how many times he was shot..but he keep saying he dont want to be around that but everyday he goes to be around that and live that type life.
and why not...all his homies are there...they surrounded by a bunch of chicks, it looks fun....but he aint taking care of his kids..still trynna flip coke because hes addicted to the money. so people make it their life because they dont know different and some dont want different.
but it falls back onto the parents.

No. I'm saying you need to get your fucking boots on the ground and hands in the dirt to fix shit. Lecturing people from some ivory tower of celebrity, playing a make believe doctor on TV while demanding people become pharmacists, does not actually change the circumstances for these people caught in the throes of adversity. Unless he's out here personally mentoring thugs then he's not doing anything that is actually gonna have an impact. Does he expect the people selling drugs or their bodies to suddenly stop? How are they to live? Is Pill Cosby paying their bills? Where is the fucking community on this?

He has a special place on the Mt. Rushmore of condescending Rich Black folks after that speech

Bill did that though. Bill put his money into bettering the Black community on a whole. His role on TV was to highlight a professional Black family instead of the usual shit we were deliberately shown. Then he sent his TV daughter to a Black university and guess what happened? Enrollment in HBCU's in the late 80's and early 90's shot up. Overall, Black student enrollment numbers were up across the board at all universities and that trend started in 1985, peaked in '92, and stabilized between 93 and 98.

The attitude about going to college shifted in our community. Having lived through that era, I can say wholeheartedly that The Cosby Show and A Different World had a lot to do with it. It's one thing to talk about it, but to have it presented to you in the way it was back then helped a lot changed the way we thought about ourselves.

Think about how we were presented as in the 70's and early to mid 80's: George Jefferson, while successful, was a high school dropout and a janitor. His wife was the maid to a white family (The Bunkers).

On What's Happening!!! Mabel was a single mother with a criminal ex husband that came in and out of his kids lives. Ultimately even she disappeared leaving Roger to raise his little sister.

Arnold and Willis were two poor kids from Harlem adopted by the "benevolent" rich white man their mother worked for before she died.

Do I even need to go over Good Times or Sanford and Son?

The images we got out of early Black TV wasn't all that great if we're being honest with ourselves. While we all have fond memories of these shows, they really didn't portray us in the best light possible. That completely changed with The Cosby Show. He used his platform and his celebrity to show Black folks in a more positive light.

And it helped... A lot.

If you had a normal, nuclear family don't you think that makes your opinion weaker, considering that we have data that shows 80% or more of all convicts were raised by single mothers?

but i still had to make my own choices. smart choices. a two parent household doesnt guarantee anything...but it damn sure helps.

now with you saying single mother.....single households.

thats the point hes getting at......why are men walking away and leaving the child behind. and then people get upset at the child going to jail. he really not blaming the child.....hes blaming the parents. thats why i dont get why niggas are mad at him.

thats exactly what hes saying.

as for me....i say the same....us men need to step up and be the men our women and families need.

just because someone was raised fucked up dont mean they have to stay that way.

its a choice at a certain point.

If you gonna play dumb then I’ll troll back.

I ain't trolling you was full of shit with that in front of white people statement and when called on it you ain't willing to admit you was flat out wrong.
