Because of the 90 day no-compete clause. Which basically means that he couldn't sign or go on AEW or any other promotion's television until the 90 days was over. He was released so he technically was not under contract. He walked it back because it wasn't official.jeff was still being compensated by wwe at the time and walked back his comments probably due to legal ramifications
