Official Wrestling News Thread

I don’t think there’s gonna be any new debuts tonight. There’s supposed to be an international shakeup between now and MITB which is in the middle of May.

Twitter account @WrestleVotes had reported on Sunday afternoon that Randy Orton vs. AJ Styles was scheduled to kick off the Wrestlemania 35 PPV main card. Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins ended up opening the show instead.

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com noted that WWE did in fact change the match order at the last minute:

“Believe it or not the show had already started. They rearranged the order of the show that [the Universal Title] match would go on after they had already started. It was actually 5:30 local time before the switch was made to put them on first.”

“Hogan when he was doing his promo had no idea what Paul Heyman was doing when he was walking out because when Hogan was told what he was supposed to do, his little shtick that wasn’t gonna happen and I guess nobody told him that they had switched it.”

The WrestleMania main event was botched and there is no denying that fact. It appears WWE has dealt with this issue and determined that the referee was to blame.

Fightful Select reports that there was initially heat on WWE referee Rod Zapata after the main event, but it was said to have died down on the night of the show of shows. Then he was pulled aside by Vince McMahon when he got to RAW on the night after WrestleMania.

McMahon had a conversation with the referee and explained to him how he messed up and what he should have done. Essentially, the count should have been stopped because WWE tells their referees to officiate matches as if they are a shoot. Therefore, it made zero sense to keep counting when Ronda Rousey’s shoulder was clearly up. He should have at least stopped his count and waited for Rousey’s shoulder to be on the mat before starting again.

It is reported that Zapata was fined for this mistake although an amount was not disclosed. Another option given was the match should have carried on and they needed to work up a finish on the fly. The concern was that Ronda Rousey had rehearsed this match and the finish was there with no Plan B.

Vince reportedly told Zapata that the match should have continued and if the Superstars messed up then it would have been on them.

On today's edition of The Wendy Williams Show, Williams updated on WWE star Sasha Banks canceling at the last minute, noting that Banks had a family emergency and wished her and her family well.

Obviously, everyone at PWInsider.com does the same

I remember a botched finish at Starcade97 between Sting and Hollywood Hogan......they had to do another match with the correct finish at a different ppv

PWInsider is reporting that the Road Dogg Brian James made the decision to resign from his lead writer position on the SmackDown brand.

According to PWInsider, multiple sources have said that James has had ongoing frustrations with script changes made by Vince McMahon and it reached a “breaking point” this past Tuesday in Brooklyn for the SmackDown after WrestleMania

There is no word as to who will be replacing James in his role as of yet and it is currently unknown if Road Dogg will take another role in the company. In addition to that, PWInsider states that the lead writer position is more of a formalitiy in today’s WWE landscape.

WWE Creative team member Robert Evans was let go by World Wrestling Entertainment over Wrestlemania week, PWInsider.com has confirmed with multiple sources.

Several sources have told PWInsider.com that Evans was let go at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony after a speech he had produced featured a mention of Vince McMahon. McMahon has strongly stressed for years that he does not want to be mentioned or praised during the Hall of Fame ceremony, to the point it has become something of a running joke. When McMahon's name was mentioned, sources stated that Evans took the blame as writer and producer of that segment. One source stated the firing took place at the gorilla position as the Hall was ongoing.

According to Stu Carapola’s WWE Hall of Fame coverage, Bret Hart’s induction speech included the story of the first time Vince McMahon reacted to the Hart Foundation and praised their work. There is no confirmation as to whether Evans worked on that specific speech yet.

The DX induction that closed the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony later featured the entire DX contingent mentioning McMahon’s name over and over in a silly way, which may have actually been sparked by McMahon’s reaction to his name being dropped earlier in the evening. After all the name dropping, Bully Gunn quipped that McMahon couldn’t “fire” him.

Evans, 35, wrestled for Ring of Honor, CHIKARA and other promotions under the ring names RD Evans and Archibald Peck after breaking into the business under the late Skandar Akbar. He signed on with WWE Creative in the fall of 2016. We are told Evans was liked by those who worked with him within the company
