As we noted last week, WWE began moving departments into their new HQ in Stamford, CT this week. We are told that the legal and technological departments are among the first to migrate from Titan Tower to the new building, but there may have been 1 or 2 more.
We are told that there are still renovations ongoing and it's going to be a long process before the entire company has been moved over to 677 Washington Boulevard in the heart of downtown Stamford.
WWE initially announced their plans to move to the new HQ and sell Titan Tower in early 2019, but obviously the COVID-19 pandemic forced major delays into that process. The WWE logo was attached to the building in July 2019. Now, there are several massive logos for the company on different sides of the structure, easily seen when driving by on I-95 that are absolutely impossible to not see as you pass.
As we have reported in the past, the move from Titan Tower was decided upon for a number of reasons. The company had simply outgrown the old building, which was considered by some we have spoken to within the company to be technologically inferior to more modern buildings that have been built in recent years. The move, when completed, will allow for every aspect of WWE to be under one roof for the first time in many years. Currently, certain divisions of the company are housed in different buildings near the Tower, requiring the company to shuttle them from place to place. WWE also has a crossing guard on hand to assist employees as they cross from one building to another. Plus, the company's production facilities are housed in another building a short drive away from Titan Tower. By the end of this process, everyone will be under one roof, for the first time ever.
The move will also place WWE in one of the grandest buildings on the Stamford skyline, as well as within a short walk of the Stamford train station. Currently, WWE shuttles employees from the station to the HQ. The new building is large enough to house every aspect of the company and one source even noted they could put multiple Performance Centers in the building if they ever opted to go that direction. We are told there will be at least one wrestling ring that is permanently up for use.
The new space features 712,000-square-feet per floor while WWE's current home houses 110,000 square feet per floor. WWE's lease for the new Global HQ is for 16.5 years, with five five-year renewal options afterward. There's been no discussion of WWE potentially buying the building at this time.
WWE has been in the current Titan Tower since 1985, when they acquired the building and has housed the company's offices since. WWE has filmed many vignettes (and even a Super Bowl commercial) at the Tower, even hosting an entire episode of Monday Night Raw from the Tower when a blizzard shut down the entire State of Connecticut. The company has stated their plan is to eventually sell off Titan Tower and to evaluate three other locations they currently own and lease, which house production facilities. The Tower was originally built in 1981.
WWE's new Global Headquarters building was the former home of financial company UBS. At the time, UBS had the
largest stock trading floor in the world. They left the building in 2016 for a newer location across the street.
ANOTHER ALL ELITE SERIES
We've been asked a lot about the new potential AEW series.
The lone potential TV taping that is being advertised by AEW is the Calgary date at the Saddledome on Saturday 7/8. That is listed for a 5 PM local time start, which would be 7 PM EST. That would likely mean the series, should iit happen, would broadcast on 8 PM EST on Saturdays. We've heard of a potential two hour series. AEW has previously filed trademarks for the titles
AEW Collision and
AEW All Elite Women. My guess is its the former.
In regard to rumors of an AEW brand split, the idea we've heard is that certain talents would be exclusive to one show or the other, but it likely wouldn't be a "hard" brand split similar to what WWE has with a Draft, etc. It would just be another series where certain storylines and matches transpire with AEW talents, some of whom would be exclusive to that broadcast.
BUT (AND THIS IS A BIG BUT), nothing is set in stone and nothing would be until there's something official locked in with Warner Bros. Discovery. We have not heard that anything is, but that there had been conversations dating back months about the idea. Discovery will hold their annual upfront presentation for business partners on Wednesday 5/17 in New York City at Madison Square Garden's Hulu Theater, so if they are going to launch an additional series for AEW, you'd think that will be where they unveil it to begin lining up advertising partners.
One cable source we spoke with believed that if a series was launched, TNT would be the likely home given that TBS already has a top-tier series from AEW in Dynamite, but that was their opinion, not something being stated as a confirmed fact. They also projected that down the line, The Cartoon Network could be an eventual home for AEW programming as way to add something unique to that cable network and a way for AEW and WBD to further their relationship - and that TruTV could be a future home for other content as well and the deeper WBD gets involved, the better it is for AEW.
Now, should AEW go to a schedule where they are running Wednesdays and Saturdays live on a weekly basis, that's going to promotion-changing overall from a workload basis for everyone, on camera and behind the scenes, especially the production team - and will be one of the biggest expansions in the history of the promotion.
Now, all that said, until an official deal is struck and announced, it's all mostly conjecture.
