Golovkin Promoter on Derevyanchenko: GGG Needs Proper Pay
Tom Loeffler, promoter for IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), believes a fight with mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko needed far more than three weeks of promotions - and GGG also needed a lot more money.
The camp of Derevyanchenko were pushing hard to face Golovkin on May 5th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Instead, Golovkin will face late replacement Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs).
Vanes replaces Canelo Alvarez, who on Wednesday was suspended for six months because he tested positive for clenbuterol in two drug tests that were taken back in February.
Loeffler would have been open to making a fight with Derevyanchenko, but there wasn't enough money available to make that fight and there wasn't enough time to properly promote it.
“If it’s a mandatory, you need to promote that fight properly, you can’t promote it on three weeks’ notice,” Loeffler said to The Press Telegram.
“Even if Derevyanchenko was willing to take short money, why should Triple G be short-changed for a mandatory situation?”
Loeffler said the selection of Vanes was the best choice possible in a tough situation - given that Vanes is a local fighter with an Armenian following and he's been showcased numerous times on television.
At the same time, Vanes will enter the fighter after almost two years of inactivity and is also moving up from the junior middleweight limit.
“Under the circumstances, the choice was really Gennady just not fight May 5 or we put the fight together under these circumstances,” he said.
“It’s not an ideal situation. I don’t dismiss that, but it’s not like we planned a fight three months out and we had plenty of guys to choose from and we picked Vanes. But he’s local, he’s had a lot of TV exposure. If Canelo hadn’t tested positive, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
