Official 2019-2020 NBA Thread

It sounds like he’s speaking in general and not talking about Porzingis.
Yea, and the key thing he said is "the game has changed". Those 2 questions can apply to most big men in the NBA now. The ones that can pass, don't have the post moves to draw a double team. The ones that are effective in the post make wrong reads alot of times when the double comes.

Just run a thought exercise and name the big men in the NBA that u think are a yes to those 2 questions.

Hence why its a "Low value Situation".

I am not saying i like it. I grew up on Shaq doing damage from the post, but unfortunately, the game has changed.

If the logic is taking the highest percentage of shots which means if you’re shooting a jump shot then shoot the shot that’s worth the most points (3) or take a shot closet to the basket (layup), then posting up creates open 3 point opportunities when they double down low the big kicks it out to the wide open man, or he posts up and gets a layup or short jump hook.

Jokic can pass and post up, Nurkic can pass and post up, Embiid can if he wants to, Brook Lopez, Dwight, the last 2 don’t get the ball in the post anymore but they are capable.

Yea, i get your frustration. Closer to the basket should mean better shot, but unfortuntely that is not true. Almost all the players with high volume of post up possession get under a point per possession. (@O.G. Embiid is the best in the NBA among those high volume guys)

Take a look at Porzingis' PPP and u will see why he probarly should never get a single post possession. Porzingis shoots 28.3% in post up possessions this season.

Learn me something how is the bold true? I feel like we hear the same thing over and over and we start to believe it.

U are arguing semantics here. Closer to the basket (Dunks and layup) is still and will always be the better shot.

But the conversation we are having here is about offense generated through post up. There, all the stats show its not the better shot.

I’ll fall back because I don’t want to be argumentative. I don’t agree with that point and I haven’t heard a good argument other than it’s just better because it’s better.

Embiid better then Aldridge in the post?

I think come 4th qtr. crunch time I would put my money on LA to get a bucket.

So i played with the stats from the last 5 years, and one thing that sets LA apart from most of the high volume post up guys is his turnover rate in the post is consistently low.

So i kinda agree with u about him been more reliable in crunch time to get u a bucket. Will still take Embiid overall though, his ability to get to the line at a high rate is elite.

I feel like this is a GREAT argument. I said it, explained it, then found u the actual stats from the last 5 seasons (https://stats.nba.com/players/playtype-post-up/?SeasonYear=2015-16&SeasonType=Regular Season) to aid my point.

If u choose to ignore all that, then u are right, there is not much we can do here.
Because the stats don’t dispute my point. Closer to the basket is a higher % shot, teams are posting up less in general due to analytics so that could skew the numbers anyway.

They might be posting up less, but by the end of each season, we get enough possessions to make educated conclusions. Most of these guys barely get to shooting over 50% from those possesions. And when u factor in the Turnover rate, the points per possession is even lower.

If guys are posting up like 5 times a game and turns the ball over twice, scores twice and miss once how is that enough of an educated guess? Numbers too low to truly quantify. Big men are spotting up or pick and rolling more now than posting up.
