But then there probably wouldn't be a movie. That's why shit like Star Lord ruining everything, it has to happen. It everything went as it should there would not be much of a story to tell.

I think it was a combination of the two. If I remember right, they both started glowing and then he reached back and swung it at them.

Mainly though, the Space gem is what he used to teleport everywhere and the power gem is what gave him extra strength and invulnerability.
