Because a large large large percent of Black Americans are absolutely embarrassed for being descendants of West African slaves and being an ethnic group that was created 400 years ago.
So the same way White Americans love to link themselves to Ancient Greek and Romans when Geeks and Romans didn't even see themselves as White and we do the same. And at least the modern founders of the West took on Geek and Roman political systems and culture.
It is even more ridiculous than we do it because the same people in those same areas today still don't identify as Black because Blackness is a Western creation.
So we got Black folks identifying with ancient dark skinned people who a never saw themselves as Black people and who descendants don't see themselves as Black people, nor have anything in common with us historically or culturally.
Black Americans got more in common with ancient Greeks and Romans due to be Westerners than we do with a modern day dark skinned Berber.
