OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

This whole argument seems a bit ridiculous to me.. what real damage is this movie doing? Why cant folks be excited for this? It's not taking anything away from the real history African Americans have dealt with for centuries...

Mad folks are excited to see themselves being represented as something other than what hollywood usually portrays us as.. that aint gonna magically make them forget the REAL shit black folks have been thru or are currently go through.

So i have a friend whose father is from nigeria iirc. His father gave him his name, and when he met africans from africa, they embraced him and showed him love

sound like du need to get out BMore

dawg ain't shit wrong with learning, but that longing to belong shit is a desperation that i don't share
Lomging to belong or connect to a culture and history that was stolen from you is corny and desperate?

Du...u usually on point bro...but I cant get with this

See this is exactly what I'm talking about...
Before this movie came out Niggaz was fine with seeing blacks in movies doing ratchet shit as long as it's a good performance...

Now as soon as super save a nigga shows up we so tired of the shit...

Lol
It was all good just a week ago when we was breaking down scenes from the wire...

But we off that shit now....

Menace 2 society is no longer a classic hunh?

Denzel ain't kill training day?

We tired of dmx in belly?

I'm not. I can pop those classics in any day, maybe y'all Niggaz tried of seeing that shit, but yeah y'all go head and trade in classics cuz y'all tired of seeing your people in classic roles.

Those are classic roles. And we dont discontinue giving props to those roles because of Black Panther b.

We are tired of the limitations. Tired of the biggest roles we have been seen in....the most recognition we recieve is when portraying the negative shit about our people and culture as black people. American or otherwise.

THATS the shit im tired of.

Yes Du...we all have people in our families, have close friends that live that reality...but its only ONE part of the spectrum of Black people.

We can be super heroes too. We can be the main Physician in a Medical drama. We can be the incorruptable DA and police detective in Crime dramas. We can do rom coms. We can be silly af in nonsensical comedies.

And yes we have had short times where we had that...but folks is getting tired of always seeing the gangster, thug nigga drug dealer, Or poor troubled black kid in the ghetto or corrupt cop/politician or uncle tom coon or primitive uncivilized african, or crazy genocidal dictator or the refugee in war torn region character put to the forefront while all other depictions of black people are put to the rear.

So yes I am excited as fuck to see BLACK folks on the big screen in a GLOBAL EVENT be depicted as super heroes and villians, billionaire geniuses and strong proud warriors as intergral and significant characters in thier fictional world...

Du losing me with this we ain’t African shit

My g, look at your nose

Yous a booty scratcher lmao

S/o @Black Caesar with the 1804 reference. Bro I fucking read yet didn’t know one detail about the shit. I had heard of it but knew nothing. And that’s fucked up cause niggas should know. The pride I walked away with watching that

I been sitting here thinking nah we had to cover that in school and maybe I just wasn’t into school...but I don’t think so and I had mad black history teachers. That’s foul...I made it thru 4+ years of college. We ain’t talk about that.

I had one old school good ass professor who offered extra credit if we came by and watched hidden colors...I passed on it...

Man,study , then grab your kids and put them on game...I appreciate my path but I should’ve been told these things way before I left home

Damn, man. Y'all ain't done yet?

Only thing I'd throw in black folks face is that Black Panther sales should soar in the comic world. More Black Panther, or favorite character from the brand, costumes and such. Merchandise and maybe even a boost of interest in the black fiction scene a bit. Just a slice of wishful thinking.

Go see the movie then at least come with a real reason to knock each other around. Don't hype the shit beyond expectations. You can easily blind yourself. Happens often with fans in the gaming world.

I get what he's saying. Many of us descend from people who been out gone from Africa for 3 or 4 hundred years. I think he's saying that we should be content to accept ourselves as Black Americans and not feel like we have to cling to some loose and antiquated connection to Africa.

We're not tired of seeing our people in these roles. We're tired of seeing our people ONLY in these roles. That's the simple argument.

We're tired of being relegated to subservient, or emasculated, or violent, or dumb, or token black person movie roles. That's all that this boils down to.

Y'all really acting like black panther is the ONLY positive image of black folk in film now??

Yea, I don't wanna use the wrong word, but this is machoism of I'm not mistaken.

Black folk could have 25 great positive movies in a row.... But the first negative one

"All we do is star in movies where depicted as thugs"

Lol, like exactly how did Micheal b Jordan and boseman even become mainstream??

Didn't Jordan just play the human torch? Has Samuel Jackson, will Smith, idris elba, Don cheadle, played damn near every character imaginable??

Naw.. From y'all memories they ONLY played thugs and drug dealers.
And this movie is the FIRST escape from that.

These perceptions are very telling.

Y'all talk black pride, but when y'all continue to push these agendas that we only good for stereo types, it makes me wonder.

Early on this thread folk were saying they celebate black history every day..... To me that means you're constantly exposing yourself and your family too positive black images....

I mean if it's every day, why not. If you are truly pro black, you already see positive images and constantly promote them.

But when Niggaz make it seem like there are no positive black images and this movie is a savior of some sorts, it makes me question the commitment.

I wanted to see this movie cuz in a comic fan, bp always been a dope character, and this movie looks to give him Justice.

Seems like everybody else going cuz unless it's a block buster movie, they don't know where else to go to see positive black images, do they're over reacting like this shit is gonna end racism or something.

But again... It's like 1 vs 100 in this thread.....

So I'll take my L

Niggaz making accounts to chime in.....

This weekend gonna be hilarious

You know damn well what I meant and you're oversimplifying shit to fit an argument.

No shit we have movies that are outliers, as it pertains to black folks being cast in stereotypical roles. I didn't think that needed clarification. However, MAJORITY of "black" films fall into those previously mentioned categories.

Is that better? Or are you just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point?

Just enjoy the movie and stop thinking too much.
Man shut the fuck up...

That's the whole point of the forum to discuss and talk about black community issues.

Shit damn near 40 pages and still on topic.
