OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

You're projecting like a mf'er, who says they're not proud of who they are. This is no different than those nerds dressing up like Jedi attending those star wars movies. It's not as serious as you're making it out to be.
and i call that shit corny too... it's silly and they look like nerds..and people laugh at them....

but now that's it's black folk trendy, it's 100% cool and nothing is wrong with it

1st, you have stated that point several times, so dont try to downplay it like it was just once and i latched onto that

2nd, what other studio has just given money to any community? He said that it is a business, and they need to turn a profit, which in turn, will give other opportunities for films to be made.

So he said he himself gives back, but thats not good enough for you?? Marvel has to give back as well b/c they made a movie about a black superhero?

3rdly, i still dont understand why this bothers you...so i am only allowed to wear my african print if i know its origin? What if, just what if, someone sees this movie and it sparks a fire in them for them to want to learn more about their african ancestry?
dawg ain't shit wrong with learning, but that longing to belong shit is a desperation that i don't share

again, your last statement is the very definition of either or Du

why cant he be 100% south carolina AND still learn about his heritage while also embracing that? Why does he have to just be proud to be from South Carolina? You act as if he said he dont identify as being from SC.
i never said either or...never....i said just be careful not to lose your identity in the process...

I see what you're saying but I somewhat disagree with the notion that if an African American wants to embrace African culture, which we all have an origin from, must hate themselves.

I look at it like this...

We took lemons and made lemonade. But those lemons were the Worst of the worst lemons figuratively speaking. And while there are accomplishments we can be proud of, what it all boils down to is a fabricated culture created from the effects of slavery. So I will never knock anyone who wants to connect to what we once were before our original culture wad taken from us by force.
i don't like that notion, we might have come from impossible conditions, but we as a people were never the worse f the worse, and we need to stop looking at ourselves like that, and that can't be the motivating factor to wanting to learn more... i don't think folk should be so ashamed of themselves and who they are they have to latch on to the culture of our ancestors when there is a lot to be proud of by our own hands.

i never said either or...never....i said just be careful not to lose your identity in the process...
you do realize you dont have to say either or to imply either or right?

but, cool, i see that pov a lil better now

Remember when we all got mad at mainstream America for taking an interest in rap music when 8 Mile came out? When they were particiating in rap cyphers in homes. lunchrooms, street corners, and stages across the nation JUST to mock the culture of Hip Hop?

Me neither.
yes i do....i do remember black folk shitting on 8mile saying that people are interested cuz it's about a white boy, and that this isnt the greatest hip hop movie of all time, but social media wasn't what it is today, and the platform to discuss these things wasn't as broad

dawg ain't shit wrong with learning, but that longing to belong shit is a desperation that i don't share
and this is where the disconnect is b/t the two of us

i didnt take his comments of "longing" to imply he was not happy with who he is and how he was raised

but to become more aware of his ancestry and really gain a greater appreciation of where his folks originated from

you do realize you dont have to say either or to imply either or right?

but, cool, i see that pov a lil better now
naw, you're taking what i'm saying and applying your twist to it....i never said either or, or implied either or, i just suggested caution....

because that's how it's coming off...folk are acting like they can't do both....

i took issue with that poster that showed clips from shit we were once proud of and considered classics, with the caption
'we're tired of seeing our people depicted like this"

like really?

word?

so john singleton who we consider one of our best film makers..who brought us powerful genuine images to the screen that impacted out lives and our people...we tired of seeing the images from his movies because wakanda arrives?

we tired of new jack city, one of the movies i could have swore we all loved....i could have swore we all use quotables from...i could have swore we all consider a classic...because we got new images.

menace to society.another classic, don't be a menace...comedy classic....
we are saying we're tired of these images... classic movies... movies that got a lot of black actors on, movies that we all memeroxed and cold act out our favorite scenes at the drop of a hat...

it's like we're ready to trade in 30+ years of black cinema for this one movie cuz we're tired of seeing these images, we wanna see these African images...

to me that's trading in our culture for African Culture.
to me that makes me think that in the face of Black panther, we're suddenly ashamed of images we once loved....

that makes me think black people consider ourselves inferior to African culture...and i'm voicing my opinion on it....

but again.. i'm willing to accept i'm wrong... but i still feel how i feel about it, and if yall @ me, imma speak on it

that's cool for him, but i ain't desperate to learn sit like that...i'm very happy with what we've built for ourselves right here in America....I'm proud of where we came from and I'm optimistic about where we are going. I don't need to get in touch with my roots to have pride for my people..ll i gotta do is watch my fellow black americans continue to do great things, and that alone give me enough to be proud about

you are taking those comments out of context

if you yourself just sat and said you can feel proud w/o having to trace your roots (paraphrasing), then that means you embrace the different roles on the spectrum black people have taken

No one is diminishing the movies like Menace, Boyz, New jack, etc...

But there is so much more to black people than slave and drug dealing movies which is the point

So yes, why is it that hollywood or the gatekeepers continue to ONLY fund those types of movies?

Name me one poster here who currently is a slave, sells drugs/poison to their community, etc...

Those movies had their times and places

@King Du

I never said we were the Worst of the worst. But I was making a point to describe the conditions or ancestors had to endure for us to even be alive today. I can understand being proud of the accomplishment of the collective and the pereserverence it took to make it to where we are today. But I also can understand not wanting to embrace a culture that spawned from those terrible conditions. Why would you have a problem with someone wanting to reconnect with the culture of their foreparents if the possess the knowledge to do so?

they're classics and shouldn't be diminished or disregarded for the next new and shiny thing.
nobody here has done that, HOWEVER, just like i said, if we are still making movies about gang culture, drug dealers, etc in 2018, then how far have we really come?

the only slave movies i wanna see at this point are the Nate Parker "birth of a nation" type of films, or something like the Haiti Revolution...Black wall street still needs a movie...projects like that

im cool on the butler, 12 yrs a slave, etc...

Why would you have a problem with someone wanting to reconnect with the culture of their foreparents if the possess the knowledge to do so?
it's cool forreal, like on the real i don't have an issue with it to be perfectly honest.

i just don't like trying to make it superior...

you don't have to put one thing down to big another up...

and we always do that... only in this situation, we're putting down ourselves to big up african culture, and in the process lose sight of who we truly are...

shit's another level of self hate, and i'm calling it out as i see it...

if we are still making movies about gang culture, drug dealers, etc in 2018, then how far have we really come?
so that shit just magically went away?

it doesn't still affect us?

i'm trying to be a writer. should i not express myself because my books be on some hood shit... should i not try to make my shit into movies cuz it's on some hood shit....

like we can't pretend the hood shit ain't goin on just cuz they got vibranium in the marvel universe

no man

if we are STILL making those types of movies...emphasis on STILL...then how far have we advanced as a society?

are black people more than the images portrayed in gang culture, slave, drug dealer type movies?

yes or no

yes we are....of course we are....i'm firmly aware of that ...are you?

or are you ashamed to be black because that we still have gang culture and drug dealers in our society?

you mean to tell me that yo feel we have not advanced much because we still making movies about shit that's still going on in the hood?
are we supposed to pretend that shit don't exist anymore?

why?

who are we pretending for?

should shows like the chi not be on tv at all? i mean the general consensus was that LaLa was a dope character on black lightning that was killed off too early.......are you saying his character should've never been on there??

we all have ugly shit to talk about

are you ashamed of your people?

do you not have no drug dealers, or gang members, or any negative black folk in your family?

do you pretend they don't exist?

if your cousin in jail over a bag of weed, are you ashamed of him??

police still killing niggaz... yea some of them might have been in that life... but are we supposed to not portray their images, because it's not as pleasing to the eye as the wakanda empire...

ugly shit still goes on bruh...

real shit still goes on...

we can't be ashamed or try to hied real shit....cuz if we do, then we not being real...

which means we fake....

which leads back to my irritation with all this shit in the first place....

niggaz look fake as shit tryna be something they not.....

1. they don't understand. they mock us for it
2. we wouldn't "long for that connection" if we just had some fucking pride in who we were, and embraced ourselves as a people
3. "will do anything" reeks of desperation further strengthen my point

1. I know. lol That was my whole point. We have to move past unnecessary animosity like that.
2. You can have pride in who you are and still want a connection to your roots. Everyone else has that, why can't African Americans as well?
3. I guess their is desperation in that for some. That doesn't mean it isn't a worthwhile endeavor.
